Bush challenges hundreds of laws
President cites powers of his office
By Charlie Savage, Globe Staff | April 30, 2006

WASHINGTON -- President Bush has quietly claimed the authority to disobey more than 750 laws enacted since he took office, asserting that he has the power to set aside any statute passed by Congress when it conflicts with his interpretation of the Constitution

Among the laws Bush said he can ignore are military rules and regulations, affirmative-action provisions, requirements that Congress be told about immigration services problems, ''whistle-blower" protections for nuclear regulatory officials, and safeguards against political interference in federally funded research
Legal scholars say the scope and aggression of Bush's assertions that he can bypass laws represent a concerted effort to expand his power at the expense of Congress, upsetting the balance between the branches of government. The Constitution is clear in assigning to Congress the power to write the laws and to the president a duty ''to take care that the laws be faithfully executed." Bush, however, has repeatedly declared that he does not need to ''execute" a law he believes is unconstitutional.

1. If Congress do not impeach him can the people call for
resignations of congress and the executive branch?

3. Well, this law student thought it was a thousand.
But 750 is o.k.

Seriously, I was wondering why the constitutional scholars weren't speaking up; I think that they were. For some reason, no one was covering the demise of our democracy (and our drift into fascism)- probably wasn't important enough (at least not as important as the Holloway case).

5. You would think this would scare the rethuglicans
I mean if it is a power grab for the exec branch then that would make a repig congress powerless against democratic president.

6. misleading headline (just sayin)
Edited on Mon May-01-06 09:23 AM by librechik
and thanks for the catchy meme! I'm sure that's how it will spread across the country.

he merely gave himself the power to disobey 750 laws whenever he effing feels like it. But Congress and the American people will never know the extent of his lawbreaking, because the "signing statements" are written in secret, and are difficult to get a look at, even by govt officials.

7. Isn't that outrageous!
The president is supposed to be working for us; literally, he is a government employee. And yet his employers, us, cannot see the documents authored under his name.

We have to demand an end to this - John Dean, former employee in the Nixon administration, says that this guy is more secretive than Nixon (and that's saying something)!
