Is anyone marching in support of the immigrants today?
Edited on Mon May-01-06 09:02 AM by Bluzmann57
I live in the Quad-Cities area of Iowa and Illinois, and as far as anyone knows, this is going to be the only Bi-State march in the USA. It will not be anywhere near as large as the marches in bigger cities, but it should be signifigant anyway. We have a fair sized Hispanic population here and in a town called Silvis, there is even a street named "Hero Street" which honors Hispanic war vets who lost their lives in service to their country. USA not Mexico. And there is a large Tyson foods plant as well, which employs many Hispanics. We also have a large Vietnamese population and I suspect that many of them may take part as well. An organization which I am a member of, Progressive Action for the Common Good is marching as well, and if it doesn't rain anymore, I believe I will be there.
The march starts in Rock Island, IL and goes across the Centennial Bridge into Davenport, IA. The bridge looks directly down at our Minor League baseball teams stadium, and the team is playing a doubleheader starting at 11:00 AM today. So they will be playing when we cross the bridge, assuming they aren't rained out again. And "Nightline" is supposed to be here as well. It could be interesting, especially if all the emplyess at Tyson call in today. There is also a Louis Rich plant not far from here and they may be down as well.
I'm not sure but I think Hero Street has a website. If so, I would recommend it. The street itself has had several brave Hispanic men give their lives in service to the USA because they were willing to fight for it. Anyway, if anyone else is marching in support of immigrants today, have fun and good luck.
On edit- The Hero Street website address is www.herostreetusa.org. It tells about the brave Hispanic men who gave their lives because they believed in America. Too bad chickenhawks won't put their lives on the line like these men did.

6. Speaking of Tyson Foods
Edited on Mon May-01-06 09:05 AM by gatorboy
Heard on the news this morning that half a dozen Tyson plants are shutting down today since a bulk of their worker count is possibly going to be off today. Considering how politicians have said it would be too difficult to penalize companies that hire illegals because it would be extremely hard to pin point just which companies hire them. I think it's pretty safe to say that today would give them a good idea....

10. that's odd..
That's true but of course not likely.
Pretty odd when you go back to the mid 90's where even limited, underfunded police and governmental forces had enough 'gumption' to raid bars, 'peace meetings', strip clubs etc.

Yup, that's pretty odd

14. Nothing odd about it.
If a company like Tyson can freakin' announce to the world that they'll be shutting down services for an entire day because their workforce will be at an illegal immigrant rally, I think it's safe to say that they're not worried about being investigated for hiring illegal immigrants. And I don't think I have to tell you why they're not worried...

12. 12 Hr /6 days per week in the 1800's & poverty wages-gone.Thanks, UNIONS!
The newspapers printed racist ant-German, anti-Irish, anti-French, and the widely known anti-Black opinions. Corporate newspapers published anti 13th amendment(1865-outlawing slavery), anti-14th amendment (1865-full civil rights to MALEs native born or naturalized). That was the climate in which the union rank & file fought and won our living standard that we have today.

ANTI-UNION is anti American, and Democrats owe their constiuency to the UNIONs, and to the immigrants that did the building and the planting and the mining and performed the services at the lowest wage levels in the country.

Those who are foreign born professionals, that found easy legal immigration can remember that they too owe their comfortable, wealthy lifestyle to the society that is only as free as it's least priviledged men and women and children.

13. Nope.
I will not be on the same side as Bush and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Think about why this is so -- because they want exploitable, cheap, servant labor in this country.

And one of these days, even tender-hearted progressives will lose their jobs, or see their wages lowered, or lose their health benefits, if we don't start fighting for good, working class gringos.
