Woman: Well I didn't vote for you.

King Arthur: You don't vote for kings.

Woman: Well how'd you become king then?

King Arthur: The Lady of the Lake, her arm clad in the purest shimmering samite held aloft Excalibur from the bosom of the water, signifying by divine providence that I, Arthur, was to carry Excalibur. THAT is why I am your king.

Dennis: Listen, strange women lyin' in ponds distributin' swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.

29. "There is no America. There is no democracy. There is only IBM and ITT..."
Per Ned Beatty's character, Arthur Jensen, in "Network" (1976 - 30 years ago!):

http://www.americanrhetoric.com/MovieSpeeches/moviespeechnetwork4.html
You get up on your little twenty-one inch screen and howl about America and democracy. There is no America. There is no democracy. There is only IBM and ITT and AT&T and DuPont, Dow, Union Carbide, and Exxon. Those are the nations of the world today.

What do you think the Russians talk about in their councils of state -- Karl Marx? They get out their linear programming charts, statistical decision theories, minimax solutions, and compute the price-cost probabilities of their transactions and investments, just like we do.

We no longer live in a world of nations and ideologies, Mr. Beale. The world is a college of corporations, inexorably determined by the immutable bylaws of business. The world is a business, Mr. Beale. It has been since man crawled out of the slime. And our children will live, Mr. Beale, to see that perfect world in which there's no war or famine, oppression or brutality -- one vast and ecumenical holding company, for whom all men will work to serve a common profit, in which all men will hold a share of stock, all necessities provided, all anxieties tranquilized, all boredom amused.

46. From Good Will Hunting:
"Why shouldn't I work for the NSA? That's a tough one. *chuckles* But I'll give it a shot. Say I'm workin' for the NSA and I'm somebody puts a code on my desk, somethin' no one else can break. Maybe I take a shot and it, and maybe I break it, and I'm real happy with myself 'cause I did my job well. But what if that code was for a rebel army somewhere over in North Africa or the Middle East? Once they have that location, they bomb the village where the rebels are hidin', 1500 people I never met, never had any problem with, get killed. Now the politicians are sayin', 'Send in the Marines to secure the arae', 'cause they don't give a shit. It won't be their kid over there gettin' shot, just like it wasn't them when their number was called, 'cayse they were all pullin' a tour in the National Guard. It'll be my buddy from Southie takin' shrapnel in the ass.

Now he comes home to find that the plant he used to work at got exported to the country he just got back from and the guy who put the shrapnel in his ass got his old job 'cause he'll work for fifteen cents a day and no bathroom breaks. Meanwhile, he realizes the only reason he was over there was so we could install a government that would sell us oil at a good price. And of course the oil companies used the skirmish to scare up domestic oil prices; a cute little ancillary benefit for them, but it ain't helpin' my buddy at two-fifty a gallon.

Naturally they're takin' their sweet time bringin' theo il back, and maybe they even took the liberty of hiring an alcoholic skipper who likes to drink martinis and play slalom with the icebergs. It ain't too long till he hits one, spills the oil, and kills all the sea life in the North Atlantic.

So my buddy's out of work, he can't afford to drive so he's got to walk to the job interviews--which sucks because the shrapnel in his ass is givin' him chronic hemorrhoids--and meanwhile he's starvin' 'cause every time he tries to get a bite to eat the only blue plate special they're servin' is North Atlantic scrod with Quakerstate. So what do I think? I'm holdin' out for somethin' better. Fuck it, while I'm at it why not just shoot my buddy, take his job, give it to his worn enemy, hike up gas prices, bomb a village, club a baby seal, hit the hash pipe and join the National Guard? Hell, I could be elected president."
-Will Hunting

The worst part about Republicans, particularly the Neocons currently in charge, is that they have somehow roped good, talented, dedicated people who love their country into destroying it...and others, too.

Thread over. I win.
