Which pointed barb from Colbert stung Bush the most?
I would say it was the photo op remark but there are plenty to choose from

I watched it live and kept wishing out loud that c-span would show Bush's face

1. Bush stands for things, he even stands on things, like aircraft carriers
and piles of rubble and flooded cities, and we can all sleep better knowing that after a disaster this administration is going to bounce back with the world's greatest photo ops

or words to that effect

20. could this have been the stinging moment?

i did not watch the dinner, therefore, i do not know, but if this wasn't the stinging moment, it ought to be.

40. That's the one that made Bush change expression
Right after that quip he wasn't smiling any more. He had been putting on a reasonably cheery face up to then, but no more. Too many people are now seeing the photo ops for what they are, and the Bushies know it.

30. Agreed. Hindenberg quip had to have hurt.
And, good. Good, I say.

It's chilling to watch the end of Colbert's bit, where Bush coldly thanks him, and the First Lady (Empress?) refuses to even rise from her chair (throne?).

34. The Hindenburg quip, with all its implications,
probably didn't register with Bush till later

I stand by my assertion that that the photo op barb hit him hard immediatelybecause the aircraft carrier stunt and World Trade Center bullhorn moment were things he was proud of and someone to his face told him the vast majority see those stunts as the reality they are:photo ops

Government by photo op: we are on to you George! And have been for awhile

6. For me it was "Deck chairs on the Hindenburg". It's implication....
...that the administration was, at any moment, about to fully burst into flames was a great capstone on all the other barbs.

I don't know why, but that one didn't feel completely fair. :freak:

27. It was fair considering the "stop-loss" program for the GIs.
These guys and girls are often unable to leave when their term of enlistment is up. Also, sending these troops back over there for three or four tours is cruel and heartbreaking.

They become CEOs of corporations that make money from death and destruction, like Lockheed Martin. Fuck those guys. They are all ghouls.

It kind of goes along with that "war" thing. Let's attack the people who start them, not the ones who signed up with the noble intention of defending their country.

32. I think the one about
the generals -- "still on active duty?"

* * * *
This is the 2nd time in about 3 months that Bush has gotten totally skewered. The last time was at Coretta King's funeral. At the eulogy, people took turns lamblasting him. It took an unbelievable 4 hours to get through all the sludge aimed at him.

He did look completely tortured. So did Laura. They know everybody's savvy to the game.

35. "I believe the government that governs best...
...is the government that governs least--and by these standards, we have set up a fabulous government in Iraq," was pretty in there, too, especially since so much of Bush's whole presidency depends on pretending that Iraq is a "success."

36. "The last third is usually backwash."
Or:

"This administration is soaring. If anything, they are rearranging the deck chairs on The Hindenburg..."

Or:

"Enjoy that metaphor, because your grandchildren will have no idea what a glacier is."

Or:

"I'm a simple man with a simple mind, with a simple set of beliefs that I live by."

Or:

"Somebody shoot me in the face."

Or:

"And reality has a well-known liberal bias."

Or:

"Things like aircraft carriers and rubble and recently flooded city squares."

Or:

"I have nothing but contempt for these people."

Or:

(You get the idea! The whole thing was brilliant.)
