Mrs. Alito fashion review day 2
Yes, it looks as though she sewed up someone's throw rug for her ensemble today, but the real question is - what's that brooch? It looks like a crown, like the Imperial margarine logo (appropriate, I suppose...)

I know it's shallow to evaluate such things, but when the fashion offenses are so grievous they must be noted.

27. Living on a lighted stage Approaches the unreal For those who think & feel

Living on a lighted stage
Approaches the unreal
For those who think and feel
In touch with some reality
Beyond the gilded cage

Cast in this unlikely role,
Ill-equipped to act
With insufficient tact
One must put up barriers
To keep oneself intact

Living in the limelight
The universal dream
For those who wish to seem

Those who wish to be
Must put aside the alienation
Get on with the fascination
The real relation
The underlying theme

Living in a fisheye lens
Caught in the camera eye
I have no heart to lie
I can’t pretend a stranger
Is a long-awaited friend

All the world’s indeed a stage
And we are merely players
Performers and portrayers
Each another’s audience
Outside the gilded cage

7. okay
I'm still stumped why she's wearing a crown on her throw rug, but what's underneath the rug is also intriguing. It looks like a clump of knotted jute, or perhaps - gasp! - hemp. The entire look is sloppy, thrown together, and one would think she was a large brown puddle slumped behind him were it not for the shifting eyes and the bizarre smiling at inappropriate times (or perhaps inappropriate to me - she must be in on some private joke, which of course is on us).

40. Girls just want to have fun
We can all see the seriousness of these
hearings...and the farce. Women will be more affected
by this choice than men will and yet unless there
are enough votes against him, he will be confirmed
and there will be more anti-choice, Catholic men
on the Supreme Court than is healthy for women's
rights to their own reproductive choices.

It's certainly not politically correct to
regard Mrs. Alito as part of this man's job for life,
but give us an outlet to have a little fun at
her expense...I have a feeling she'll continue
to be well provided for.

planned to wear if I was going to be on national television. The camera is on her almost constantly. Wouldn't you have asked somebody, anybody, what they thought of your outfit? I agree that this is shallow, but appearances count and looking like she sewed up an old couch cover can't be doing her husband any good. Kind of reminds me of that classic Carol Burnett Gone with the Wind sketch, where she wore the velvet drapes, including the rod: I saw it in the window and just couldn't resist it...

Since the rest of the country is allowed to observe, I wouldn't have a problem with his children, for history's sake, watching the proceedings from the balcony. But there's no reason that his nearest and dearest should be directly over his shoulder, throughout. Do they whisper in his ear, or what?!

As for bringing my Freeper family to job interviews, they embarrass me quite enough from a distance.

And 2 days in a row she looks awful IMHO plus I can think of other photos when he was introduced to individual Senators that she looks terrible

I say this as a women fortunate enough to be married to a man who has said (not frequently thank God) Are you really going to wear that?

Confirms to me that Alito is a weasel, that he has no taste

Also since conditions around America are so bleak this topic is silly enough to make me grin

I love the Betty Bowers site, with the section "Republican Glamor", by Mrs. George W. (Laura) Bush.

http://www.bettybowers.com/fl2.html

One of Laura's fashion tips...

" A true lady is always worried about showing up in public in the same outfit as someone else. Avoid this potential problem by completing your Liz Claiborne stretch slacks with a Butterick jacket you can make yourself using fabric from an old lilac bridesmaid's dress."

Maybe Pickles is giving Ms. Alito fashion advice.

Will she be asked anything by the Senators? If not, doesn't she have her own life she should be living? Did the administration just need someone they could completely trust to keep a blank face behind the candidate?

I guess I don't get it. This is a dog and pony show and she's bringing up the rear.

But really - are my eyes deceiving me, or is that brooch really the Imperial margarine logo? Can somebody else take a close look and confirm? This is noteworthy only because that logo isn't an accident - it's a symbol of royal imperialism and I think it's telling she'd be wearing it.

88. Its common practice. Been done for years
And there's nothing wrong with it. I have attended confirmation hearings for numerous judges and other government officials and almost always see the spouse (and, depending on their age, children) of the nominee present. Why not. Its a big deal, getting a presidential appointment. For example, Ruth Bader Ginsburg's husband sat behind her all four days of her confirmation proceeding as I recall. The fact that the TV cameras focus in on the family is the thing that has changed. (Actually, the thing that has changed is that confirmation hearings get gavel to gavel tv coverage now...in the past you might see a clip and usually the camera was close in on the nominee, not on those sitting behind him).

There's plenty wrong about Alito and I'd like to see a filibuster if that's what it takes. But carping about his wife attending a confirmation hearing is pretty silly IMHO.

onenote

90. My mother's comment about Mrs. Alito's fashion sense
I apologize if her comment offends anyone...

I just spoke with my 75 year old mother who told explained that "that's the way east coast Italian Americans dress, trust me." :spray:

53. Comfortably wearing a skirt while sitting in a chair that's too tall...
is really uncomfortable. Sitting "like a lady" in a chair where you cannot comfortably cross your legs gets old really quickly.

She looks physically uncomfortable.

55. you have to feel sorry for her...
right in the camera's sight...she can't fidget,
scratch her nose, make Bush-like jaw movements,
stick her tongue out at the Senator's asking
probing questions etc.

but she will be well rewarded for this
act.

56. An old lady's couch covered in plastic.
That's what it reminds me of. And yes, she really looks uncomfortable.

Call the fashion police!

59. Hey, how come
we sit here and mock out Mrs. Alito's looks, but a thread that asks how a 50ish woman should dress gets moved to the lounge?

60. Gee.. that family looks like tons of fun. NOT.
Why do republicans always look so damned pinched? Loosen up for heaven's sake! No wonder the conservatives have cornered the market on secret perversions... repressed as hell.

73. Uh Oh, Neecy, Now You've Done It
She musta caught wind of all the evil, nasty (and very funny) things being said here and that's what triggered Mrs. ScAlito's tearfest. Ah...now Wolfie's showing it again and again.

You're an evil dooer...

Keep up the good work

:toast:

74. hmmmmm
If we critique his clothing tomorrow, I wonder if we can make him flee the hearing room in a flood of slobbering tears?

And here people said I don't care about the issues! Hell, we can have this jackass back in Jersey in no time at all.

82. This Whole Episode Is Real Squirrley
Now why would she lose it on questions that surely "Da Coach" Lindsay would have warned them ahead of time were coming or that hubby would have told his long time life partner (assuming they really know each other) that she should take an extended lunch cause she might be upset by what Coach Graham would be saying. Surely he had to have the script on this.

I find the timing...after Specter got his ass handed to him by Teddy and now that those old CAP files will have to be turned over and looked over, we get these theatrics. Hmmmmmm indeed.

Now, I'd suggest we start singing Bruce Springsteen songs or Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes...or even Bon Jovi...those people sure look like they can cut a rug...
