The scary question is whether these monsters are *immune* from satire, via cartoons or otherwise. When a person, institution, or phenomenon is patently so far beyond the pale, then she, he, or it develops a certain Teflon shell.

My dissertation dealt, among other topics, with French poetry of the Decadent school. A work intended as a parody of their stuff was published by a couple of guys under the title The Deliquescence(s) ? of Adore Floupette. I forget whether the noun was plural, but that's not the point. The point is that the joke fell flat. It took a year or two for the intended parody to be recognized as such. The problem was that the Decadents' own work was so outré that it was almost impossible for indended parodists to create stuff sufficiently *more* outré to be recognized as parody. As the saying goes, the Decadents' work was self-parodying, and thus Teflon to attack.

So it is with the Bush administration. These (mostly) boy-guys are really, really extreme. Think about it, folks. Check each cartoon. I assume that most readers of DU will recognize the cartoons as parody, satire, attack. But partly that's a result of context, right? What if the same views were presented on a right-wing blog, without the caricature images. Would they still seem extreme? Or might they be saluted and then embraced?
