Thankyoustephencolbert.org: over 17,000 w/a few infiltrators to boot |

Check this out: I am 66 years old and mark my calendar every year for the Congressional dinner. Not since the debacle of Don Imus have I been so offended and bored by a so called comedy act. The joy of watching the president and the press lampooned was overshadowed by your tasteless and overbearing attacks upon the president. From the first so called joke that fell flat, you went steadily downhill. When you did get a reaction, the audience mostly groaned.
As you know and have seen, the president has a great sense of humor and is well able to joke about his own deficiencies. The weight of the world is on his shoulders and doesn’t need to suffer fools gladly; fools who couldn’t fill his shoes for one day. He needs our support and our prayers every day.
The worst slur of all was your assessment that he has used tragedy to elevate his image. What would you have done on 9-11; crack a few more stupid jokes?
I think you need a bit of humility as well as to learn to develop a more respectful sense of political humor.

The Chicago Tribune (argh) has a blog called The Swamp. The latest thread is about the WH dinner; the comments there are great -- overwhelmingly praising Colbert...and some pretty funny gems too. http://newsblogs.chicagotribune.com/news_theswamp/2006/05/a_dinner_likely.html#more

May 1st, 2006 at 9:09 pm If the powerful sit silent And the common people cheer You know all you need to know About the words just spoken here.
While Cheney plays at Merlin And Don at Lancelot Steve Colbert is the Jester Whose humor masks a shot
To tell King George he’s naked (the truth at last exposed), Bereft of moral clothing, His kingdom all but closed.
“Ha ha — a joke, told by a knave,” The king and knights exclaim, “Why should we take him seriously? Has he our might, our fame?”
And yet, e’en as they doth protest, And fain to look away, The bead of sweat, the compressed lips Do more than they can say
To show how deep the Jester’s words Have cut into their soul. They know he speaks the truth — they know, As faint they hear the toll
Of the funeral bell of history, And the judgment they deferred, As, one more time, the Jester Has the final word.

16409 Greg Bevillard Says:
May 1st, 2006 at 9:28 pm Wow, thanks for making the extreme left believe that a comedy routine was a turning point in history. Anyone who thinks your comedy routine was “brave and courageous” is certainly out of the mainstream. Now, what I would like to hear is you come out and say that it was more than a comedy routine and that your comedy routine was actually a serious criticism. Then, you don’t to have to hide behind your comedy any longer. Then, you might be able to have a serious discussion as to why we are at this point in history. I’ll give you a hint, it’s because of the incompetence, fraudulence and ineffectiveness of the Democratic Administration which preceded the Bush Administration. Now, that was comedy…I mean tragedy.

May 1st, 2006 at 9:40 pm I’m someone who has found you humorous on occasion, but this was not such an occasion. It’s one thing to be insulting and funny; it’s another to be insulting only - in other words, childish. And the way you messed up the joke about the glass being 1/3 full was unacceptable for an alleged professional comedian.
If you really want to speak truth to power, as a lot of these people seem to think you’re doing, next time try insulting some muslims.
Sincerely,
Greg Clark

18. Yeah ... it is supposed to be a 'thank you' site. |
|
If they want to be insulting, let 'em pay for their own site. Isn't that just like a conservative to piggyback on someone else ... instead of carrying their own weight .. like they do with corporate subsidies? Never met one that wasn't cheap; if you mistakenly go out with one, you wind up paying for the meal!
