Sensenbrenner town hall meeting tonight
I drove over from Madison for the Sensenbrenner town hall tonight, although I never went in to the actual meeting. The room it was being held in was fairly small- maybe 35-40 seats although they crammed a few more people in there. It was on the first floor of the town library in West Allis, Wisconsin, a close suburb of Milwaukee.

I expected protesters. The people who showed up were more protesters than supporters- but the two organized groups of protesters were from religious groups. One was an interfaith youth group from Milwaukee, and the other was a women's group named Sophia which included women both inside and outside the district. Interesting that the protesters were there to confront him on moral and spiritual grounds. Sensenbrenner challenger Bryan Kennedy and his campaign manager came. There were cameras and print reporters. The rest were individuals who came because they wanted to confront Sensenbrenner, and not in a good way.

One person who went into the meeting came out and told us she had asked him a question about Hispanic children in her son's school and he couldn't give her a straight answer. She said most of the questions were on the immigration topic and Sensenbrenner, who had a stack of cards with questions on them, kept picking cards from conservative areas like Waukesha, but it never turned out to be a 'friendly'. She said there were 15-20 of his supporters in the meeting, but most of the people were not. I saw one very angry woman in a wheelchair before the doors were closed, and I would love to know what her question was.

I was in the lobby of the library for about an hour with this mix of protesters, reporters, and the people who couldn't get in. I talked to an elderly lady who didn't make it into the meeting before they closed it, and she said Sensenbrenner was voting to cut off food from poor people who needed it and she was one of those people. I have no idea what program she was talking about but it made me really sad.

My sign "deporte a Sensenbrenner" was a hit at the Madison rally so I brought it to the town hall meeting and held it up to Sensenbrenner as he walked by. I'm sure he saw it. One lady inside asked me about it and I said, well, we don't really have to deport him. We just have to get him out of the House. She said that's MY CONGRESSMAN you're talking about and I like him. I said well, "he's bad for the country and the rest of the country hates him. Its time for someone new". She said "why couldn't you make your sign in English, don't you speak English?" Clearly, I really ticked her off.

An older man came up to me and told me that he fought for our country and now "those people" get to come in here and enjoy the benefits of his sacrifices. Does he even know how many of the soldiers who have died in Vietnam or Iraq were not even citizens?

A reporter from Mexico City took a picture of me with my sign and said they will love this back home!

I didn't see throngs of Sensenbrenner supporters, just a couple of old bitter Republicans. Time for someone new with a higher set of moral values to represent this district of Wisconsin.

1. He's such a petulant child when he's being called on the carpet
I can only imagine him getting all red in the face.

And Waukesha isn't as friendly a territory as it used to be. Just elected a Dem Mayor they did.

Anyway, thanks for the report. I do hope that Bryan can get the job done come November. Maybe if Sensenbrenner keeps shooting himself in the foot.

3. I think Sensenbrenner is vulnerable
I also talked to a couple of people from the district who were against Sensenbrenner but didn't know a thing about Bryan Kennedy. They think they're stuck with Sensenbrenner, like a chronic illness that doesn't take away your life but makes you completely miserable forever.

They're not really stuck, they just have to get out and vote.

6. It is notoriously hard to get rid of an incumbent
But I agree, he's as vunerable as he's ever going to be.

If we could make him actually campaign this time it would be something. He doesn't even bother normally. Which is probably a good strategy for him, as showing up on a tv ad would likely have a negative effect instead of a positive one.

7. He is filthy rich but I don't think his support is deep
We need grassroots grassroots grassroots to get Kennedy elected. I heard they had a great day signing up volunteers at the May Day rally in Milwaukee.

I don't think Sensenbrenner has people who will knock on doors for him without being paid for it. Its a midterm election, and I am hoping that everyone takes this seat for granted and doesn't bother coming out to vote.

Thanks for the report! Sounds like we need to spread the word that people have another choice now with Bryan Kennedy!
