We are a Three Stooges nation - not a George Carlin nation.... |
|
We like simple slap-stick comedy. We don't want "intellectual" stuff. We don't like stuff where you have to think. We like stupid shit. We like Gomer Pyle. Don't give us crap that we have to think about.

I just posted a very serious post down there. Now I look like a fool. The least you could do is edit your post to be way more serious. :)

4. But he rather enjoyed the two Dubyas acting "stupid"... |
|
it was a guffaw moment. :) But George Carlin would have been way over their heads....just as Steven Colbert was...

Two Dubyas is just plain scary. Nothing to laugh about there. The next thing you know there could be four of them. Oh god, it's more than I can bear to think about.

Asexually-reproduced (actually, the mind freezes in horror at any other form of Bush reproduction).
I guess the only consolation is that they will all be accident-prone, cowardly, and prone to hiding while they yell and whimper for everyone else to go out and conquer for them.

2. Physical versus mental. |
|
Huh, that's interesting. I suspect it has to do with language. The British seem to play off of words. But then they also have great physical comedians. Benny Hill is both. But he uses mispronunciation as a form of double entendre.
Can you really make that claim about America? I think it's not wholly true. I say that because if I were to claim that America is primarily conservative, it would not be true. I recall, with great pleasure, those years when my family would sit and watch Laugh-in. "Wonderful Wino!" That was one of George Carlin's first major exposures. We ate it up. Tonight's weather will mostly be scattered darkness with a bit of light around morning time. But down the street, I believed, the conservatives were watching Hee Haw. I honestly think it follows lines of political belief. Allen Ginsberg. There was a place for him in America. A big place. But then so there was for Bob Hope.
America is incredibly young. And forgetful. We disgard our past. And multiethnic. I'm just trying to find reasons to support what you said. It may be true, or it may not be totally true. I'm dead serious that an intelligent country is far more enjoyable than the alternative. It's the kind of thing I dream about at night, believe it or not.
I'm sorry I don't have much to add. Just a few thoughts.

...have more respect for the Three Stooges. They were sweet, innocent, endearing entertainers -- they even got a bit edgy during WWII. Please don't dismiss them on principle.
Much of the current fashion of "humor" these days is the sarcastic, vitriolic and accusatory -- or irrelevant. Straight up, with no artistry.
But there is a democratic underground who are amused and informed by the art and wit of Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert. And Lewis Black. These artists lead to profound truths through humor. The most important comedians have always done so.

15. The Three Stooges humor came from smacking each other. |

How is that "sweet" and "innocent"?

9. I can't find a single thing about jr funny. At this point, jr's handlers |

know that the only way out of jr's problems are for people to start laughing about them. I'm not laughing.

11. Some of the most sophisticated, clever comedy has come out of the US |
|
But, yes, I agree to a point -- today, we tend to cater to the Lowest Common denominator and I think that denomionator's getting lower all the time.
The US needs an educational enema, among other things. A generalization, of course, but generally true.

of why so many thought Dubya was so funny, but they didn't laugh at Colbert because he made them "uncomfortable"...well, stupid presidents make me uncomfortable and I didn't think it was funny at all...

Been away from the news a lot lately.
I like it that way, actually.
But I think I get the gist of it now.
Yes, there's nothing 'funny' about that little f***wit. Or the evil motherf***ers behind him.

The "doppelganger" routine was Patriotically Correct and Safe. It was also meaningless. I am naive enough to be surprised by how it has been praised as first rate comedy. How far do you have to have your head up your ass to come to that conclusion? Same thing, last year, when they gushed over Pickles as a brilliant comedian because she read some lines about masturbating a horse and going to Chippendales with Condi and Jurassic Monster Lynn Cheney.
Colbert had his moment -- and he rose to the occasion magnificently with great wit and insight. IMHO it was the definitive comedy performance of our troubled era.
