Colbert walk-out: The Comedian“won a rare silent protest from Bush Aides"

Skewering comedy skit angers Bush and aides
By Paul Bedard

Posted 5/1/06

Comedy Central star Stephen Colbert's biting routine at the White House Correspondents Association dinner won a rare silent protest from Bush aides and supporters Saturday when several independently left before he finished.

"Colbert crossed the line," said one top Bush aide, who rushed out of the hotel as soon as Colbert finished. Another said that the president was visibly angered by the sharp lines that kept coming.

"I've been there before, and I can see that he is ," said a former top aide. "He's got that look that he's ready to blow."

If aides recognize the storm signs it does imply they are familiar with them thru previous experience.

Go Bush blow up. Please. In PUBLIC, like the HINDENBURG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think he tries quite hard to be a mass murderer. You are making it sound as if he hasnt put a lot of effort into starting WW3, and piling up the corpses.

Give credit where credit is due.

100. bush crossed the line........
Colbert was just bringing it to his attention, and the media's attention as well. bush's little comedy routine with his "double" (didn't look much alike to me) paled in comparison to Colbert's.

We can't aggravate the little dictator now, can we? :eyes: I'm GLAD bush had to sit through it. I'm GLAD he and pickles had to face the truth for once and not sit among fawning, hand-picked sycophants as is always the custom. There was no where for bush to hide Saturday, nowhere to run and no Daddy to save him. There he was, visibly peeved, "naked as the eyes of a clown", as John Prine would say.

Stephen Colbert is a hero in my book. He didn't sell out. He took his one chance (for there will NOT be another, rest assured) and said what every patriotic American SHOULD be saying.

Fuck bush, fuck his ass licking toadies and fuck the corporate media for again acting like the hypocritical cowards they are!

when people tell the truth, remember Coretta's funeral, they are clearly like fish out of water, when they don't have their base singing their praises, isn't that too bad. Also I remember when Condi said to someone, don't get the President upset, does Mr. Bush have an anger issue???? Too bad Jr.

110. Here's why this story is a CROCK o' SHIT
The president ALWAYS leaves FIRST, and WHILE the final speaker is talking, is THE time that the aides and assistants would NORMALLY leave first to PREPARE an exit for the president and his wife. They do not just GEt UP and leave..

In past events, the aides would just quietly get up and wander over to the presidential exit area, and no big deal would have been made of it.

HOWEVER...

this time someone dared to step across that invisible line, and Prince Pissypants got miffed, so the NORMAL behavior of presidential aides is being spun to represent a "protest"..

Ha!

78. Satire is NOT OK. Colbert crossed the line.
Lying on a daily basis to the American people is perfectly fine.
Sending people to their deaths in an unjust war is groovy.
Fleecing taxpayers so your pals can get richer is just good business.
Outing a CIA agent and an entire National Security Operation is "fair game."
Running a country with complete disregard for the benefit of its citizens and their future--O-OK.

But satire? No way. Even this administration draws the line somewhere.

19. "I've been there before..." Just how often?
Gee, you'd think Bush was unflappable from the way he is presented to us. Even keeled. Good natured. Able to take a little horsing around, just for funs sake. Wouldn't you?

I mean, to not be able to handle a little good natured ribbing, you'd have to be a hypersensitive, spoiled brat, wouldn't you?

On the other hand, to seek out and "win" one of the most criticized jobs in the human world when you can't personally handle criticism, you'd have to be clueless moron, wouldn't you?

And for your underlings to be aware that you "blow" up on them when someone unrelated has pissed you off would require they recognize that you are an irrational, self centered psychopath, wouldn't it?

Who still supports this guy?

THEY invited HIM. I doubt Colbert's agent contacted the white house requesting the gig. Didn't they watch the show first - BEFORE they asked him? As someone earlier mentioned, Imus' vebally attacked Clinton on a personal level and it wasn't funny. All Colbert did was line up all the miserable policy failures and shine a light on them. Wonder who made the final decision 2 ask Colbert? Better be polishing up that resume sparky.

I watched the video last night (out of cspan range over the weekend - raisin brain looked a bit tipsy 2 me). I was told but it wasn't shown, that when pickles left the table, she stood up and threw her napkin @ the table - anyone else see that?

As one would even in the presence of a President that one disagrees with on several non-vital areas. I suppose I could have behaved in front of Bush Sr. or in my most disagreeing moments with Bubba. Shrub and company seem to forget just how fucking far they have gone.

They don't quite seem to get that the vitriol that they bring out in people and that no manner of playing to a obviously sold-out media will save them from this anger. Not in the information age at any rate...

"Bush's own funny routine...featured an impersonator who told the audience what Bush was thinking when he spoke dull speech lines."

It showed how he screwed up speeches as they traveled from brain to mouth. Hardly an indicator of a fully operational "thinking" process.

At any rate, it's pleasing to see the staff openly admit to president Cranky McCrackpot's generally tetchy temperament.

His partner (a professional comedian flown in from California, backed by a scriptwriter and an award-winning Hollywood makeup artist) had to do all the work. Steve Bridges has a lot of experience lugging around bad amateur comedians on the corporate event circuit, but still ... even he had to be wondering why it took 2 dress rehearsals, after more than 3 months of preparation!

A youngish aide who is a Bush favorite described the perils of correcting the boss. “The first time I told him he was wrong, he started yelling at me,” the aide recalled about a session during the first term. “Then I showed him where he was wrong, and he said, ‘All right. I understand. Good job.’ He patted me on the shoulder. I went and had dry heaves in the bathroom.”

81. this is the language used by victims of domestic violence
"He's got that look -- he's about to blow."

I knew that look, too. I saw it for years on the face of my husband the batterer. Also a narcissist, incidentally.

When the abuser gets "that look" the victim(s) get that sick feeling in the pit of the stomach. Trouble ahead. Duck and cover.

It's a revelation. George W. Bush is verbally and emotionally abusing members of his staff. Well, come to think of it, he's doing the same to the people of the world.

Every person who has feared an abusive family member knows "that look" intimately. God help us all.

129. So, how fast did his aides speed dial the media?
So,his little sychophants were terrified because they knew their boss would go into a holy rage the minute they were out of public view. As others have pointed out, they knew the signs of imminent abuse. They desperately had to defuse his ....fuse. I imagined they speed dialed the media, telling the to run the story as, "bush the best comedian". That would account for the immediate deafening silence on Colberts brilliant skit. And, the aides were able to mollify the little chimp by telling him that the world thought he was funnier than Colbert.

I am serious. How quickly did they put their 'spin' out to the media? Because the media instantly all ran with the same theme...that bush was hysterically funny and Colbert bombed. I heard the same said on Tucker Carlson and Olbermann (but not by KO) last night.

131. Link to Video that shows Bush looking for WMDS to Howling press
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x1085389

VIDEO:Bush looking for wmds - big laughs - McGovern exCIA Comments

I've uploaded a clip from my film "Rove's War" where I showed Bush looking for WMD at the WHCD, and of course the Press Howling with glee, as opposed to the Blazing Truth that Colbert laid on them that made them all run and hide under rocks and slime.

The Clip of Bush is offset by the video I filmed at the Downing Street Minutes when I flew to film that from Hawaii to DC (thanks to many at the DU), entire event having heard that NO MEDIA were going to be covering it. (I've added some of the troops that DIED while this BIG JOKE was being played out by Bush)

Sitting Next to Cinday Sheehan and Joe Wilson was James McGovern who is ex CIA, did 27 years of service for this country (this guy would make a Great president!), and he makes comments about this "BIG JOKE" brilliant man.

Just so people can see the contrast between what the media whores will do for the Chimperor, and how they will shrink like vampires when the SUN comes out.

132. Welcome to the misery party, assholes
We are on the edge of losing it all the time. The "angry left" the "Bush haters". I guess Colbert wasn't funny at all. The truth is a real bitch and it does make you edgy. Here's a favorite snip of mine from the event:

I stand by this man. I stand by this man because he stands for things. Not only for things, has he stood on things. Things like aircraft carriers and rubble and recently flooded city squares. And that sends a strong message, that no matter what happens to America, she will always rebound with the most powerfully staged photo ops in the world.

I've been blowing my top for years waiting for that truth to be spoken. That's all you ever did, Dear President. Stage photo ops on ruins of death and orchestrate more death.

137. Oh god.. total bs propaganda!
I watched the clip again, and people laughed and clapped. It was not mic'd the same as a comedy show would be.. the mics were at the front of the room, near the speaker.

WHY are those people sooo afraid of some roasting?

141. They should have been escorted out.
And on to the Hague.

Those people have so much blood on their hands they are unworthy of being in the same room with and breathing the same air as Mr. Stephen Colbert.

144. Victims once again.
They weren't in control of the message and Bunnypants wasn't on the pedestal he so desperately needs to be on. How sad is it that cowering and mincing words has become such an integral part of having to deal with an American President, that when one man decides not to, the courtiers scream bloody murder?

Colbert's comedy has shed light on a true American tragedy.

Bravo, Stephen, bravo.
