"It's well known that the vapor-voting (touchscreen) machines forced into our election system by HAVA have caused widespread terrible problems with lost votes, switched votes, and un-auditable counts. It's less well known that an even bigger problem in recent elections has been voter suppression by corrupt officials such as Katherine Harris (in Florida) and Kenneth Blackwell (in Ohio). These crooks used numerous underhanded tricks to expunge voters from the rolls, whom they feared would vote "the wrong way." The scams included retroactively changing the registration rules to require special paper, falsely accusing voters of being felons, suddenly imposing arbitrary new identification requirements, and more. Now there is a move by operatives in many state legislatures and even in Congress to legalize and codify these dirty tricks, such as the "RealID" proposal to require numerous forms of ID which many people (usually the working poor) do not have. Under the guise of "protecting" electoral integrity, this will cause terrible harm to electoral integrity by excluding dozens of legitimate voters for each questionable voter it might catch. This is a scam and it is unfair and it must be stopped. We must renew and legitimately strengthen the Voting Rights Act."
