(Canadian dollar) rises above 90 cents US--30 year high
Edited on Tue May-02-06 08:48 AM by tuvor
The Canadian dollar soared over the 90-cent US mark in international trading on Tuesday, its highest level in nearly three decades.

The loonie breached the 90-cent barrier for the first time since November 1977, reaching a high of 90.3 before settling to 90.11 cents US.

On Monday, the currency closed at 89.83-cents US on the eve of the the federal government's budget. The dollar had just missed the 90-cent mark, reaching a high point of 89.98 cents during the day's trading.

Rising commodity prices are helping to keep the Canadian dollar at the 28-year high against its U.S. counterpart.

1. CBC (Canadian news) this morning told the story
by saying "It hasn't been this high since Jimmy Carter was president. Ouch.

4. I'm going to Montreal for the jazz festival
in June-July. WIth the exchange rate and gas prices soaring, I don't how I'm going to make it work.

6. I goto Montreal Pride at the end of July ...
it's gonna be a zoo with the Gay Games there at the same time, so it may be for the best.

5. It'll mean a lot more Canadian shoppers for the U.S. though.
I live in western NY and Canadians come in by the bus-load for shopping trips. Now that their money is worth even more I imagine they'll be buying more. It may be good for outlet malls and border town merchants. Some good may come of it.

Tell any red-meat, troglodyte, neo-con that things haven't been this bad since the Carter Administration and watch their freaking heads explode!

7. We're gonna take the kids to Disneyworld...
maybe we should book now, the trip has been getting less and less expensive over the last few months.

Yes, yes, I know Disney is the epitome of corporate whoredom, but kids don't care about that stuff when they're 6 & 8 years old.

9. And I'm heading to New Brunswick, P.E.I., and Nova Scotia
in little than over a month. I guess by then, the exchange rate will be equal.

10. Its a matter of perspective. Looks to me like the US Dollar fell in value.
;) Which of course could be reported as a rise in the loonie value. (sorry just funning around today).

Speaking of which. Why do you guys get a great name like the "Loonie" ? Thats rich. :)
