Let's Link to the Tipping Point Patriots...I'll start with Eartha Kitt
Colbert was brave and brilliant at the Correspondence's Dinner!

Eartha Kitt,an African American entertainer, was invited to the White House.
She had the guts to speak out against the Viet Nam War right there in the HOME of President Johnson.

I found a link to what happened to Eartha because she so bravely spoke TRUTH to POWER.

She was a TIPPING POINT for the Viet Nam War and she paid dearly for it in terms of her career.

http://www.researchpubs.com/books/ism1exc2.shtml

I would love to have a thread of links to other Americans that risked everything to speak up and be patriots. :patriot:

Let's provide the LINK to articles about other examples and when we are finished we can send the thread to Colbert and all the other living TIPPING POINT patriots! :patriot:

21. Eartha has always been
one of my heroines. I met her some years back and just started crying before I could even speak. I was SO EMBARRASSED! I cannot describe what came over me. She turned to the guitarist (whose guest I was) and asked "What is WRONG with this fool girl?"

Loomis replied, "Oh, she loves you for everything that you mean to her and just can't help herself!"

Eartha then took me by the hand, sat me down next to her, passed me a tissue and told me in no uncertain terms to GET A GRIP, as she regaled us all with her stories...

When this brave patriot stood on the STEPS at the seat of POWER and told the TRUTH to the American People, he caused EVERYONE to dream of a world of JUSTICE FOR ALL.

He caused many others to MARCH for Social Justice.

He changed the face of America with that one speech.

3. Elie Wiesel asking Reagan not to go to Bittburg —
and this was at a ceremony giving the Congressional Gold Medal to Wiesel!

http://www.pbs.org/eliewiesel/resources/reagan.html

Excerpt:

But, Mr. President, I wouldn't be the person I am, and you wouldn't respect me for what I am, if I were not to tell you also of the sadness that is in my heart for what happened during the last week. And I am sure that you, too, are sad for the same reasons. What can I do? I belong to a traumatized generation. And to us, as to you, symbols are important. And furthermore, following our ancient tradition — and we are speaking about Jewish heritage — our tradition commands us, quote: ``to speak truth to power.''

So may I speak to you, Mr. President, with respect and admiration, of the events that happened. We have met four or five times, and each time I came away enriched, for I know of your commitment to humanity. And, therefore, I am convinced, as you have told us earlier when we spoke that you were not aware of the presence of SS graves in the Bitburg cemetery. Of course, you didn't know. But now we all are aware. May I, Mr. President, if it's possible at all, implore you to do something else, to find a way, to find another way, another site. That place, Mr. President, is not your place. Your place is with the victims of the SS.

Oh, we know there are political and strategic reasons, but this issue, as all issues related to that awesome event, transcends politics and diplomacy. The issue here is not politics but good and evil. And we must never confuse them, for I have seen the SS at work, and I have seen their victims. They were my friends. They were my parents. Mr. President, there was a degree of suffering and loneliness in the concentration camps that defies imagination. Cut off from the world with no refuge anywhere; sons watched helplessly their fathers being beaten to death; mothers watched their children die of hunger. And then there was Mengele and his selections, terror, fear, isolation, torture, gas chambers, flames — flames rising to the heavens.

But, Mr. President, I know and I understand, we all do, that you seek reconciliation. So do I. So do we. And I, too, wish to attain true reconciliation with the German people. I do not believe in collective guilt, nor in collective responsibility; only the killers were guilty. Their sons and daughters are not. And I believe, Mr. President, that we can and we must work together with them and with all people. And we must work to bring peace and understanding to a tormented world that, as you know, is still awaiting redemption.

20. Lillian Hellman
Edited on Tue May-02-06 06:09 PM by FredScuttle
In honor of the numerous victims of the Hollywood blacklist in the 40's and 50's:

"Hellman appeared before the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1952. Asked to name names of acquaintances with communist affiliations, Hellman instead delivered a prepared statement, which read in part:

To hurt innocent people whom I knew many years ago in order to save myself is, to me, inhuman and indecent and dishonorable. I cannot and will not cut my conscience to fit this year's fashions, even though I long ago came to the conclusion that I was not a political person and could have no comfortable place in any political group.

As a result, Hellman was blacklisted by the Hollywood movie studios for many years."

30. How about Barbara Boxer on January 6th 2005?
http://www.freepress.org/departments/display/19/2005/1074

What the election challenge means
by David Swanson, ILCA
January 8, 2005

Thirty-three Members of the US House of Representatives, and one all-important Senator -- one more than four years ago -- voted not to accept Ohio's 20 electoral votes for George Bush. The votes were 33 to 260 and 1 to 72. The protesters lost. What does it mean?

First, it's worth noting that more than one Senator took action. Barbara Boxer announced her intention to challenge the election on Thursday morning. By midday Senators Chris Dodd, Hillary Clinton, Harry Reid, and Barak Obama had let it be known that they would support Boxer. During the discussion in the Senate, Richard Durbin, Debbie Stabenow, Edward Kennedy, Ron Wyden, Frank Lautenberg, and Tom Harkin joined the others in speaking in support of Boxer's challenge. And in the House, numerous members spoke, one after another, until the time was up, and the number voting for the challenge jumped to 33 from the 8 that had been known early in the day.

49. The Dixie Chicks paved the way for musical artists
to speak up. Taking the initial heat from fans many Americans, and the press. Even while gaining some new fans, they suffered some of the most relentless attacks in the press and had their music pulled from air play.

Even George W. Bush felt the need to open his yaw in the matter with the unsurprising comment: "I...don't really care what the Dixie Chicks said." even as he went on to make obvious and self-serving noises about how great America is in contrast to Iraq.

Even a later apology about disrespect to the office of the president can't mar the effect Natalie Maines comments had in beginning to shift public perception.

No one shows more disrespect to the office of the president of the United States than George Bush himself.

51. and Dorothy Day

from the Catholic Worker 1961
California

A few months ago I came back from the west coast where I saw the hierarchy silent in the face of the slavery and exploitation of the bracero and the agricultural worker. There bad been a lettuce strike in the Imperial Valley where thousands of braceros imported from Mexico, were harvesting the crop. The Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee and the Packinghouse Worker's Union held meetings at the entrance to the fields urging the workers to come out on strike and not to take the jobs of their brothers. There were many arrests and some of the organizers were put in prison. Some sympathetic priests came to speak at the meeting and were rebuked by the diocesan Officials, some of whom even went so far as to say that some communists masquerading as priests had appeared at the union meetings.

The strike was over by the time I reached El Centro, and I talked with some of the townspeople, all of whom thought it had been a great loss of crop and manpower, a real defeat for worker, for grower and for "broker." I went to the large Catholic Church and found a notice in the door "Anyone asking for jobs or help, go to the police department."

Later I heard Billy Joe Shelby, one of the agricultural workers and himself an organizer, tell how the police were filling up the jails with workers. It was obvious that those in need were not going to go to the police department. And how strange it is that the very priests who complain of the State taking over and of what amounts to state ownership of the indigent, should be the ones to shout communism when the principle of subsidiarily is being put into effect through efforts to organize into unions, and who send the poor to the police and to the State.

53. BARBRA STREISAND
Edited on Wed May-03-06 02:09 PM by Kurovski
Yes. Barbra Streisand. In the 90's when the trashing of Democrats was in its heyday, Streisand wrote an essay that highlighted all the achievements of the Democratic Party that Americans take for granted. In this era, she was one the first in Hollywood to keep her sites on the rising Right-Wing movement. Sometimes it seems to me she takes flack for all of Hollywood in general because of her early and dedicated opposition.

She has been the target of unrelenting scorn, personal attacks and condescension from the Right-Wing for over a decade. Even some in the Democratic Party don't fully appreciate her strong voice. If Streisand were a secretary from Keokuk, Iowa writing letters to the editor we'd all be giving her the thumbs up for her commentaries.

But as a performer in the public eye, she risked much more in speaking out. A talent of stature who could have easily remained silent, she took the platform of her fame and spoke up with intelligence and fortitude.

A diva's diva, yes. She has the means to live a charmed and insulated life, and instead chooses to remain aware and to speak out.

She is repaid with ugly attacks, and still she continues on.

In a February 9, 2006 post on her website, she even promotes the book
on election fraud, “Fooled Again” by Mark Crispin Miller, which the press chooses to downplay or actively ignore.

80. Elizabeth Taylor!
When the right-Wing still considered AIDS to be "god's punishment", when the Reagan administration and most of America (including Hollywood) were still ignoring the growing epedemic, Elizabeth Taylor stepped up to make a difference.

"In 1985, Elizabeth Taylor’s good friend and fellow actor, Rock Hudson, died of AIDS. It was early in the history of the disease, and few people outside of the gay community paid close attention to it. Elizabeth Taylor paid attention, and she demanded that others also pay attention. That year, she organized a huge fundraiser for AIDS research. The fundraiser provided a dynamic beginning for the American Foundation for AIDS Research (amFAR), which she co-founded with Dr. Mathilde Krim.

Since then, she has testified to Congress; she has continued to rally the Hollywood community to take a lead in promoting AIDS awareness; and she has started another AIDS foundation: The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation. Since its beginning in 1991, her foundation has provided more than $8 million for AIDS organizations all around the world. Her celebrity has helped her spread her passion and her devotion throughout the country for finding a cure and for treating AIDS victims with passion and understanding."

"I don't play golf. I'm not going to sit around. All I know is that I can go and speak my truth. That's all I have control over. And when I speak my truth, my truth doesn't come from how many meetings I have with Hollywood execs. My truth comes from trying to be in the world and trying to talk about issues and trying to understand -- and underline the word "understand" -- what is happening around us and around me. And maybe if I get a chance to put that on screen in some way or realize that on screen, that's great. " --Danny Glover

Heck, throw Jimmy Carter in there, too:

"The efforts of Martin and Coretta to change America were not appreciated even at the highest level of our government. It was a difficult time for them personally, with the civil liberties of both husband and wife violated as they became the targets of secret government wiretapping, other surveillance, and, as you know, harassment from the FBI."
