Rightwingnuts have to inject their venom everywhere -- even my hobby
Last month, Woodworker’s Journal ran a very nice piece about two exceptionally accomplished woodworkers, Sam Maloof and Jimmy Carter. Jimmy Carter, you all know, but Sam is not really a household name outside of the woodworking community. Both guys like to build chairs. Jimmy does it because he likes it; Sam likes it too, but his designs and techniques are so admired that people will line up to spend thousands of dollars for one. On the occasion of Sam’s 90th birthday the two got together for some shop time; there was no politics involved.
Of course no self-loathing right wing freak could leave that alone, so this month WJ published this LTTE to prove that the repukes can’t put it aside for anything:

I have been a woodworker for 30 years and subscribed to many wood magazines and archived and kept every issue. Your magazine of February 2006 is the first one I have ever trashed.
Why you have chosen to reveal your politics (actually, I’m glad you did) and placed that ex-presidential joke on the cover is beyond me. That traitor and incompetent idiot offends me, and I’m sure I’m not alone in my opinion.
Your magazine also reeks of political correctness. Who is the next great American to grace your cover: Bill the pervert, Michael Moore or Al Franken? Obviously I will not be renewing my subscription. I suggest you change the name of your magazine to “Ladies Home Woodworker” and you will be able to attract the rest of you ilk.
Robert Cristofalo

Here’s MY letter to the editor in response:
Thank you for reminding us—as if we needed yet another reminder—that Republicans are the party of intolerant, hate-filled small-minded twits who probably shouldn’t have sharp things, let alone power tools.
I do woodworking to take my mind off them and the damage they have brought to my country, but they have infiltrated even that small pleasure.
Please extend my subscription for another year. No, on second thought, make that two; I really need to get through the current administration.
MP

He's making himself look stupid. I love it when they do that.

3. Awesome!
I'm glad you took the time to write them.

Jimmy Carter is such a good man. How anyone could hate him (even if they don't like his politics) is beyond me.

15.  Ignore Crappy Criticism
Ignore Crappy Criticism

Josh Marshall has a good post about the state of the media industrial complex. One thing that's long puzzled me is the inability of editors/journalists to just ignore stupid criticism. I don't mean ignore all criticism; I mean ignore dumb criticism. I've heard of editors getting in crouch position over the possibility of getting a volume of criticism over something even though they knew fully well that the substance of that criticism was entirely lacking. That's ridiculous.

Listen to good criticism. Ignore the stupid criticism, even if it's coming at you loudly. Tune out the critics who are perpetually stupid completely.

You run a newspaper. You have the power, after all. Have some confidence. Run it any goddamn way you want.

19. I think they printed it for the very reason I mentioned
The same reason that Bill Maher will have a right wing wacko on his show; let 'em talk and show the world in their own words how stupid they really are. You don't have to point and say "look at the morAn", you just have to let them talk, or in this case, write. (I do wonder how many spelling errors had to be corrected and profanities deleted before that letter was publishable.)

The magazine printed another letter praising the article wherein the writer simply mentioned his admiration for Carter and went on to describe the project that Maloof had inspired him to tackle. I think the editors made their point perfectly without typing a single word.

over the decades.

Great response though. Guess you won't meet Robert at too many wood shows.

Trust me, this clown has plenty of company. When I received the copy of WWJ with Carter and Maloof on the cover I was waiting for an idiot letter like this.

My hobby is high-end audio, and if you think right-wing wack job central is only interested in half-blind dovetails you should see the "cancel my subscription" nuts that read Stereophile and The Absolute Sound.

Carter travels the world doing good works w/ his self-named foundation (earning the Nobel peace prize) and for that he is villified? Carter left office 26 years ago and ole repug robert still gets worked up over it. Long time 2 carry that venom around.

What's perverted about oral sex between consenting adults? Especially when they are differnt sexes? What's perverted about a man with a strong sex drive who likes women? Tell me what's abnormal about that.

12. Jealousy ..
No doubt mr. Cristofalo suffers from some form of envy, quite likely he can't achieve "wood".
Mr. Carter is a very accomplished woodworker, I admire him so much that I built a pencil post bed for each of my two daughters modeled from one that Mr. Carter built that was featured in an issue of Fine Woodworking. I wrote to Mr. Carter for permission to copy his bed and received a timely reply signed by him with his blessing. A great American.

13. Remember, Freepers are driven by insecurity and fear.
They are WRONG, and the world around them clearly shows it.

So they make every attempt to stick their heads in the sand
and ignore the rest of the world.

Was this magazine article a liberal political diatribe?
No, it simply reminded this Backwasher that President Carter exists.

And Mister Cristafalo's delusional worldview is so shoddily constructed
that such a reminder threatens it's stability.

His 'fearless leader' Mr. B*sh fails to measure up to President Carter's standard
in every way possible, and any mention of Carter reminds Mr. Cristafalo of this.

A rational person in such circumstances might choose
to find a BETTER 'fearless leader'.

A fearful, deluded person would lash out in anger
and try to make the scary reality go away.
Perhaps by writing a nasty, hateful letter, and then cancelling
the magazine that dared to remind them of President Carter's existence.

27. same here
There are some hobby boards for my collecting interest (which is as non political as you can get) and I help moderate one of the discussion boards. When the Iraq War started we had to ban political talk because we'd get OT flame wars which made the board unreadable.

Maybe it's something about hobbys that attract a disproportionate number of older white males????...

I meant yours. Robert Cristofalo is an insecure jerk who should stick to reading NASCAR Illustrated and Soldier of Fortune if he wants to feel "manly".

And this smackdown is courtesy of a progressive NASCAR fan!
