They are more topical and more honest than any of the networks.

Seen it lately? Lies and distortions that defend the Bush agenda. Why, if it weren't a once-innocuous cartoon, I might be tempted to use the 'propaganda' word.
But cartoons can't be propaganda, right?

9. Cartoons as propoganda, absolutely - ever seen the Disney stuff from WW2? |
|
Social conservatives tend to hate Southpark for "potty mouth" but they have gone after at least two liberal icons, Barber Streisand and AL Gore but frankly they go after anybody that acts pretentious - for example they made fun President Bush about Afghanistan anmd right wing Christians for their focus on money - They seemed to like President Clinton.
So while I would agree there is a conservative slant as in small government and pro capitalism and a libertarian slant in personal freedom it is a complex show and often a damn funny one. I didn't think the Scientology episodes were funny though.

Which sadly is more intellectually honest than most of the "real" news these days.

4. I'd like to see Comedy Central become a 24-hr. fake news channel. |
|
At the very least, they could transform the entire late night, beginning with Jon Stewart, into "CC Overnight News".

They could do a morning version of "Today" and "Good Morning America" which is ripe for satire.

17. How can they be intellecutally honest? |
|
The call in shows... they just take calls and report news.
The rest is just broadcasting stuff straight from DC.

That's why. Fair & balanced to the extreme. There's no commentary or spin, they just show what's happening. And the call-in shows are always sure to include both perspectives. The hosts are low-key & unbiased. It's boring & educational like PBS. I think the intellectual honesty comes in the hosts they choose, and the events they choose to cover that no other outlet will touch (Feingold NSA hearings, Murtha resolution, Al Gore speech etc.)

However I meant that since there is no commentary, there is no opporunity for anyone to show any intellectual honesty.

|
Of course, only DirecTV suscribers get it/.

So your statement surprises me, but I've not seen the product so I'm not disputing your contention.Otherwise my vote goes to Keith Olbermann though MSNBC in general would not merit my support.

11. Well, I do hate South Park, and Mind of Mencia I go back and |

forth on. I agree with a lot of his arguments- in theory- but I just can't agree with blatant racism.
Other Comedy Central shows are just garbage. Drawn Together makes me want to puke. So stupid it's literally insulting.
TDS, TCR, Reno 911 and the late Chapelle's Show. Those are worthwhile Comedy Central endeavors.

if you get your news from Comedy Central. That is all I can say. I mean I like the Daily Show and The Colbert Report, but they are not 60 minutes (except for their puff pieces) or Meet The Press or the News Hour with Jim Lehrer. Aside from Washington Journal on C-Span there really aren't any sources of good news.

29. Most people don't use them as a primary news source. |
|
You miss the point. "The Daily Show With Jon Stewart" and "The Colbert Report" are comedy shows. Now even though they are a comedy show they do a much better job of actually reporting news. They have to tell you the news to make the joke. If you removed all the snark and made up bits many of the comentaries and interviews would make excellent starting points for a real journalist that was actually doing their job.
As you so aptly pointed out These shows are not a good primary news source, But and this is important even though they are lousy news sources they are still better news sources than the vast majority of the MSM other than KO,C-span and one or two other broadcasters. And you can actuall learn some new things and their take on the news can actually make you think about some of the things they are talking about and go do further research on your own. Which is way more than any MSM show can say.

I say unfortunate because it is, after all, Comedy Central. It's unfortunate that shows that are essentially parodies of news shows are more intellecutally honest than the real thing.

24. They only reason I'd say no is because its not news |
|
which is incredibly sad, as many others in the thread are saying, because it is the only honest thing resembling news.
And at least the good folks at the Daily Show and Colbert Report are nice enough to remind us constantly that they are not a news program...
