Olbermann up +37% O' Reilly -12% Key Demo 25-54 April
http://www.mediabistro.com/tvnewser/

If you still need more evidence that CNN has a problem at 8 p.m., here it is. For the month of April, MSNBC's Countdown with Keith Olbermann was the #2 cable news program for the hour in the 25-54 demographic. Paula Zahn has lost 41 percent of her demo viewers compared to a year ago, while Olbermann is up 37 percent. Here are the numbers:

25-54 demo:
O'Reilly: 412,000 (-12%)
Olbermann: 169,000 (+37%)
Grace: 160,000 (+18%)
Zahn: 148,000 (-41%) Total viewers:

All Viewers:
O'Reilly: 2,102,000 (-4%)
Zahn: 605,000 (-20%)
Grace: 580,000 (+29%)
Olbermann: 452,000 (+28%)

5. Wonder how much all the US Govt TVs tuned to Faux
in this misadministration count towards those numbers?

7. My guess is that includes all the bars and mini-marts and waiting rooms
that leave Fox on all the time. Besides that, I am amazed at the number of people I know who watch Fox as their news source, even if they don't like Bush. I don't get it at all. Maybe because it's mostly happy "Yeah America, We Are #1" news. I can't think of any other reason to keep that shit on your teevee.

26. I've been a "Nielson Family" several times. Doesn't work that way anymore.
There are very few black box Nielson families, the families that get a hard-wired box atop their teevee. More than likely, these rating come from a combination of the type of "Nielson family"my home was, and modern cable technology. Most localized Nielson and Armitron ratings are derived from paper diaries, which require participants to log their television viewing in 15 minute increments, then mail the diaries back. Old school, man! But your cable company knows EXACTLY what you're watching every minute of every day. Don't believe me? Call tech support and report a problem. They'll know more about what is going on on your teevee than you do. My cable company, Cox, can change the channels, reset the box, make all sorts of adjustments, while I am talking to them on the phone. They don't need Nielson to tell them who is tuned in to what channel...it's all right there on their computer systems.

So, while you might think those teevee in bars and mini-marts don't count, you are thinking "old school." The cable company knows who's watching what, when. And those numbers are far more accurate now than they ever were in the days of "Nielson Families."

ratings company use the "new" technology for collecting the numbers?

11. I mentioned this before and was flamed
It seems EVERYTHING brings flames these days...but Dish Network has Fox News built into it's lower tier ($19.99) of programming and doesn't have MSNBC built in.
This assures that people who live in rural settings that don't have access to cable, as well as people on fixed incomes or tight budgets, etc, are captive audiences if they want to watch a news channel.

Certainly enough to give someone a good headstart on ratings.

29. haha that article is from 1999
Dish Network has over 10 Million subs now. The reason certain channels are in different packages is based on the negotiations between the provider (Dish) and the channel (FoxNews). Fox could have given them a lower rate if they put it in the lower tier package. Based on ratings, MSNBC does not have as much negotiating power as News Corp.

As for where ratings come from, if you have satellite, and your box is hooked to a phone line, the newer boxes phone home and reports viewing data. Dont want to be tracked? Unplug the phone line. However if you want to order PPV and stuff you have to plug it back in.

Cable does this as well, however you have no option of disconnecting it, unless you just have basic cable with no settop box.

10. It looks like the numbers are heading in the right direction.
Except for Nancy Grace. What a disgrace that woman is. I saw her get really nasty once live on CNN when she thought she was off camera. Seems the crowd of onlookers was getting too noisy, and she couldn't hear through her ear piece. She got really angry, and her eyes looked like they could shoot acid out of them.

She recovered very quickly once she realized she was still live on air.

16. Just so you know,
her record as a practicing attorney was horrid. She copped more slaps from the bench on her hot little hands, got more complaints, and was reversed so many times, she had to get on TV and make a living out of mourning her dead boyfriend, because she sure as hell had no career as a lawyer out here in the real world.

She needs dipping, clipping, and being sent far away. Her stupidity is an embarrassment to us all.

isn't exactly an accurate accounting of the facts. I hadn't heard of her dreadful legal career, but I'm not surprised to hear it.

20. I think his ESPN radio appearances are helping him, too
That hour a day he does on Dan Patrick's radio show, and his coverage of Barry Bonds, etc., almost certainly helps KO in the demo.

IIRC MSNBC is in far fewer homes than CNN and FAUX (carried in basic package with fewer cable companies), so those ratings are actually good, especially when you consider how anemic MSNBC's ratings are the rest of the day. The only show that gets close is Tweety.

21. Faux News and CNN are bleeding viewers in Prime Time
Edited on Tue May-02-06 03:31 PM by RamboLiberal
In Key Demo 24-54 Faux is down -21% and CNN 23%. MSNBC is up +2%. Total Viewers Faux is down -4% and CNN -20% and MSNBC neither gained nor lost.

Lou Dobbs had the #2 show on CNN in April, and the #1 show among viewers in the 25-54 demo.

As this chart shows, Dobbs' demo audience has grown each month this year, narrowing the gap between CNN and FNC to only 22,000 viewers at 6 p.m. Brit Hume is still winning, barely.

Versus the same month a year ago, Dobbs has increased his total viewing audience from 559,000 to 817,000, and his demo audience from 157,000 to 211,000.

24. KO's numbers would be better if he didn't spend so much time on sports!
honest.

Me and everyone I know love KO but bitch about him spending too much time on sports. Yeah, I know. he used to be. But now he's not. And those of us who watch cable news want news.

I actually tend to turn him off after 1/2 hour as the stuff in the last half hour is fluff.

28. As I posted above...
I think the sports stuff is one of the reasons for his increases in the demo. It attracts youger men and, I'm pretty certain, helps his ratings. In fact, it might be interesting for him to make a hybrid sports-inforrmation show. It's never been done and it could be very clever.
