On Friday, President Bush blasted the idea of singing the Star Spangled Banner in Spanish. But Bush’s highly-scripted 2001 inaugural ceremony actually featured a rendition of the national anthem sung in Spanish by Jon Secada. From Cox News Service, 1/18/01:

The opening ceremony reflected that sentiment. A racially diverse string of famous and once famous performers entertained Bush, soon-to-be First Lady Laura Bush, Vice President-elect Richard B. Cheney and his wife, Lynne, who watched on stage from a special viewing area.

Pop star Jon Secada sang the national anthem in English and Spanish.

Apparently, Secada singing the anthem in Spanish was a regular feature of the Bush campaign. From the 8/3/00 Miami Herald:

The nominee, his wife Laura, erstwhile rival John McCain and his wife Cindy joined Bush on a platform where children sang the national anthem - in “Spanglish,” Secada explained.

Hispanics have had a low-voter turn out, but that is changing and may change the polictical landscape if they turn out the vote & do not vote GOP. I live in Gwinnett county in GA & less than 4% of the hispanics actually vote, but they are making up more & more % of the county - believe its 14% or so now. There are voter registration drives going on right now during these walkouts.

I am an American and live in Mexico, my wife is Mexican. We both think that it is incorrect to translate the US national anthem into Spanish. She further explained that she would be livid if someone were to translate the Mexican National anthem into English and sing it in a public forum. In both instances we are referring to this translated version being used in public ceremony. I really think that any national anthem should be sung in its native language. Translating it to explain its meaning is one thing but singing it in a foreign language to me turns it into just a song and not a national anthem. If you wish to look at the national anthem as just a song with no more meaning than any other that is your decision. But in an official setting in my opinion it should be sung in English if it is to be construed as the national anthem of the United States of America.

Maybe I am old fashioned. I do not believe it is correct to burn the flag(and almost got my ass kicked in a foreign country when I put out a burning flag, unfortunately I had to step on it to put it out, and refused to give it back to the protesters to burn), or let it touch the ground. I still love the basic principals (Constitution, Bill of Rights, ETC.) under which the USA was established and think it is a model of Government that would serve many (not all) countries. And believe the National Anthem should be sung in English. I also believe that the office of the President should be respected. And although in my lifetime and eligibility age I was never drafted to war I was raised to and would have gone if called to war by my country to face a real enemy to our freedom.

Unfortunately my rose tinted glasses have been permanently shattered by this current administration. I still believe in the above. The office of the President should be respected, providing he also plays by the rules that govern all of us he is the President not the Fuehrer. Unfortunately W does not do this. The basic documents upon which the nation was founded are being ignored or changed to fit someone’s current needs. And young volunteers are being put in harms way to face an enemy that we created.

It might be one thing if the U.S. had English as its official language, but it does not. There is no official language in the United States.

I also have to disagree with your stance on flag burning. While I find the image disturbing myself, I also recognize the flag for what it is. A symbol. When we elevate a symbol above what it represents we lose perspective. I'm less concerned about a protestor desecrating the U.S. flag than I am about our corporations and politicians desecrating the U.S. itself. Who damages our country more, the protestor destroying a piece of cloth or corporations and politicians destroying the land, its people and indeed, our earth?
