So, what happens when we reach 'Peak Immigration'?
Edited on Tue May-02-06 03:04 PM by D__S
If current immigration trends continue (be it illegal or legal), at some point the supply will be greater than the demand... there is a limited amount of low paying/labor intensive jobs.

Take into consideration that the economic growth for this country doesn't look very promising. Higher fuel costs will cut into most family budgets to the point that purchasing certain goods or services
will be on the decline (people will eat at home more often, forgo vacations, etc).

It will take a few generations before the children/grand children of current immigrants move up the socio-economic ladder into better paying positions (if all those jobs haven't been outsourced by then).
Consequently, there will be little to no gap or niche of low-paying jobs to fill because of upward mobility.

Whether or not future economic trends will discourage immigration remains to be seen (somehow, I don't think it will abate for quite some time).

Are we setting ourselves up for a nation of even more poor, homeless, unemployed with no visible means of support? Could our already weakened/straining economy and public support services bear the strain?

2. We better care about poor countries
And how our corporations are keeping them poor. The solution to "peak immigration" is foreign economies that can sustain their own labor force. We'll never get there as long as we reap the benefits of cheap foreign goods without demanding fair labor, environmental and human rights trade agreements. We all live on this planet together, we're all connected, like it or not.

3. Is there a bumper sticker which says "I am not afraid of ..."

I'm looking for a bumper sticker that says I'm not afraid of
foreigners
your terror level
other religions
gays getting married
the war on Santa

or any of the other things the fearmongers want me to be afraid of.

4. If we don't do anything there will be an equalization of wealth...
And not in the sense that they will come to our economic level. Basically we will get poorer (already happening) and they will get richer, until we meet in the middle.

The only real reason they have such low wages, is that they are not on the books and minimum wage is too low. We need a higher minimum wage to stabilize this economy if we don't there will continue to be a downward pressure on wages, because the illegal immigrants are willing to work for less.

6. Corporations rule the world.
We are on our way to becoming a global ghetto. Fewer & fewer people will 'move up the ladder' & more & more will sink to the bottom. The masses will live in vast areas of heavily populated & polluted sprawl. The rich will live in secluded enclaves located in the few pristine places left. They will jet from one location to another avoiding the ghetto of the masses.

Oh wait . . . that's the future according to William Gibson. However, I don't think he's far off.

8. How about peak population?
I don't care where the people are from, but there are only so many people the Earth can support, especially those enjoying U.S. lifstyles. I've always been concerned about the environment, and I wish everyone would be more considerate of our environment.

It's very frustrating to me that birth control dispersion is often discouraged by world leaders.
