Migrants do battle with cruel, indifferent desert
Fears rise that summer 2006 may be deadliest yet for border crossers

SASABE, Mexico - Wearing tight jeans and a glittery “bebe” T-shirt, the 17-year-old scrambled out of a packed van as the temperature edged toward 90 degrees in this barren stretch of the U.S.-Mexican border.

Carrying no hat or sunscreen, the teenager who called herself Adriana Brenda said the longest hike she’d taken was through a shopping mall. But here she was, ready for a three-day trek across the desert.

She carried two gallons of water — enough, experts say, to keep her hydrated for two hours.

1. This is what happens when government's don't fight poverty
You get people uprooted and migrating.

The Mexican government has utterly sold out the Mexican people, and the corporatists win over everyone else on both sides of the border. Maybe Vincente Fox would do well to look into fighting corporate corruption in the halls of power and examining his own policies with respect to alleviating poverty rather than dumping the problem on somebody else.

2. Why didn't she just take a bus?

Oh! I get it! Because she was entering this country illegally !

Gee, it's unfortunate, but if she wants to avoid becoming beef jerky in the desert, maybe she should get in line and apply for U.S. residency like hundreds of thousands of her fellow countrymen have.

5. SHE made the decision to violate the law and put herself in jeopardy.
It was HER decision.

Am I to feel overwhelming compassion for everybody who makes stupid decisions?

4. I hope your job is the one she gets
It might teach you a little compassion and humility.

6. Doubtful.
My job involves making decisions to preserve lives, not throw them away.
