Hmm maybe I should leave DU
I think I need a break from DU and politics all together. I sure have been getting it from both ends lately here's a quick check list:

1: I have a President who thinks that a fetus has more rights than a disabled person

2: I have so called Christians saying that I shouldn't go to church because I am pro separation of church and state, for gay rights, for stem cell research, and pro choice.

3: I have ass hats who actually laughed at me for praying science to discover a cure for Parkinson's and to give me personal inner peace.

4: The grammar cops are after me because my hands tremor constantly and sometimes my fingers misspell words. (I would like to see them type when they can't feel the keyboard thanks to the side effects of medication.)

5: Now I got the ass hats saying that I am living in the lap of luxury on SSDI when I can barely afford rent and medicine. Yeah I got a tv it was a Christmas present from my family sue me

.

You know what strikes me as kinda funny ? I always assumed that Liberalism meant that your supposed be tolerant of others and take care of those that don't have anything. I guess I should have remembered what happens when we assume. So where does that leave me in all this? To paraphrase the old song I got clowns to the left of me and jokers to the right and here I am stuck in the middle again.

So anyway in conclusion I think that I might be leaving at least for a little while. I just wanted to let some of the people on this forum know that I might be leaving and that I love you guys dearly. And that if I didn't care about you guys the decision to leave wouldn't be so painful

Note to the grammar police I ran the spell check twice on thie piece. If this is still wrong blame the DU spell checker for being hugh or sirius. :sarcasm:

Take a break. We all need one from time to time. What's going on in our country makes everyone nuts.

But please don't stay away. Especially for the reasons you cited. I agree w/every single one of them.

I sometimes (mostly) think it's harder for those of us w/disabilities. People w/o a disability just don't understand.

Victoria
Another PDW

For those out there that are unfamilar w/"PDW, it means People with Disabilities.

I guess that with 88,000 participants there are bound to be idiots, but I have also witnessed some absolutely wonderful interactions here as I know you have as well. Liberalism does mean tolerance, and not just tolerance, but acceptance and maybe even nurture! The people who don't exhibit these characteristics need to find somewhere else to go, imo. 24. I know of a health product that may help...
You said a cure for Parkinson's..do you or someone else have this disease? A little FYI... They say no disease can thrive when ph is out of balance. I thought I had acid reflux or worse, and wanted something to balance ph, and found the Frequensea website. Their product is phenomonal. I don't know if it will cure you completely, but it will certainly make you a lot healthier! It has also reduced/eliminated the tumors of several customers! This is not snake oil!
It is made from Marine Phytoplankton, and it has cleansed my cells so well that everything in my life is better, including my calm outlook. There are too many positive effects to name. I am not trying to sound like a commercial, and I personally am not selling it. I just believe in passing on health advice when I can. Good luck!

26. Just remember ....
A message board tends to be a great place for loudmouths to feel big. Not everyone posts in every thread they read, so what I am trying to say is there are hopefully a lot of rational people out there reading all these posts, so just disregard those who want to attack you individually.

I use this place as a resource, I wouldn't invest too much time into worrying about or dealing with the way you believe others percieve you.

You are a true patriot, please stick around, don't let the trolls nibble on your posts, we
are so concerned about always using perfect grammar and spelling meanwhile the beatings and
torturing goes on and on, what's politically correct about that? As far as living on SSDI,
I say anyone who is chronically ill and disabled that can navigate their way through today's
health care system has more brains and guts than most ceos. Don't let the trolls get to you,
remember this is an election year and they are out to get the du'ers aka doers who are working

29. I have athritis and am going blind, so there
I'll match you typo for typo and I'll bet I'll win.

I had to take a 5 month break last year. I found I was repeating myself too often and that I was getting flamed too often for saying things that were not yet in the mainstream here. Most of them are now in the mainstream and 5 months of reflection gave me a whole lot more to say.

Sometimes we all need a vacation. I'll be having eye surgery next week, so I'll be taking an involuntary break, myself.

As for asshats dumping on you for praying for peace of mind, ignore them. You described them well, and maybe if we all ignore them, they'll grow up, both the asshats criticizing your method for getting centered and the asshats who have a kneejerk antipathy toward atheists.

Good luck and may we get rid of the Calvinists and get somebody in there who will fund stem cell research, which is really your best hope for a treatment for Parkinson's.

As a disabled person myself, I have to step back and let my brian and body rest from the stress of this nightmare we are currently living through. When you have a disability the immune system doesn't work like those with-out a disability. My stress goes straight to my body and the pain gets worse, digestion gets all twisted then theres my mental health .

Aren't most people who post pretty reasonable about things?
Someone is always going to have screwy ideas about things - that usually turn out to be based on ignorance. Its frustrating for sure but some people just need to be educated. If they still don't get it - screw 'em!

51. Go. Or don't go.
But don't inflict your self-pity on us. If someone attacks you for your grammar or spelling, just ignore them or respond. Your choice.

This is another "threatening to leave DU" thread that the drama kings and drama queens on DU are involved in too many times. There's another about Will Pitt (recently closed.)

Enough already. Decide what to do, then do it.

My attitude: don't involve the DU board in your decision to stay or leave.

52. The "threatening to leave" means that he stays
It's normal psychology. We all need to vent sometimes and be told there is nothing wrong with our frustrations.

The Will Pitt story is a different matter. He'll probably take a holiday, however in this case there is a need to vent and have people say that they care. It may look like drama but a board needs drama like this and it clears the air and is even positive.

53. Whenever this place becomes more negative than positive
for me, I take a little break.

The pattern for me is, it sucks me deeper and deeper in, I care more and more, and then something turns and suddenly it's not the place I thought it was... so I take off, get a life, slowly get lured back in. It's always great for a while (like any addiction!) and then you hit bottom ...!

DU is very educational and affirming, but if it's not working for you, it can also just be a lot of wasted time.

Nothing has changed in the last 24 hours. They're running loose again, protected by their buddies.

6 months ago, DU was running about 3000th on the web in traffic. It has fallen to around 3700th. In that time, Kos has gone from about 2300th to around 1700th or so.

Why? We're overrun by rude, far left bigots who unfortunately get special treatment. Most of them will likely stay home or vote some third party on election day, because they hate most Dems anyway.

I can't remember the issue at the moment, but it was really turning me off. I took a break but gas prices and immigration have re-kindled my interest and now I'm spending way too much time here once again. Sometimes a break can do you some good, especially when you can always come back whenever you want.

3. If praying for scientific discoveries works for you, keep praying'. It is your business, not that of the critics.

4. Ignore the grammar cops, like I ignored my English teachers. Big hairy deal. All the writing here is vastly better than that at FR (from what I have seen, they are all barely literate).

when you are dependent upon that monthly check from the government.
we pay into the system, and then uncle sam doles it out.

being on unemployment is also often referred to as being 'on the dole' as well- but that program has also been paid into by virtue of a person being employed, and is technically
called "unemployment insurance", just as ssdi is "disability insurance".

and btw- just to bitch on a side note...my monthly check is over 10% less than it should be, because a company that i worked for for a 2 1/2 year period over 20 years ago never paid into Social security what they took out of my check. the company is long gone and bankrupt, and the SS tells me that i am just SOL, with no recourse for recovering the funds...but am i bitter...?

86. Dearest Dan,
You are a kind, compassionate, and interesting human being. I always look forward to your posts, for they are given with grace and dignity.

People like to put down others because they have trouble dealing with their own inferiority complexes. It's a pity that they have to make themselves feel superior by ridiculing others. What small, small people they are.

You're a strong person. You deal daily with physical challenges, medications, and limits on your income, yet you manage to handle your problems with courage. Unfortunately, there will always be asshats...it's just human nature. Ignore them, Dan. Anyone who would laugh at your prayer for a cure for Parkinson's Disease is so TOTALLY not worth your time or your thoughts.

Grammar cops are not important. They've just managed to find something to pick on someone else about...sort of like the playground bully. They're hiding behind a keyboard and picking at you while they have many shortcomings of their own. They're not perfect. No one is.

If you need to take a break. then enjoy your time away. In the meantime, feel free to PM me any time you'd like to talk.

blue neen

I'm not allowed to be pissed off that illegal workers are driving wages down to impossible levels here and my best friends hubby will have to spend a season in Vegas just to get work BUT ~ I'm also shot down when I say our legal immigration from our southern border should be quadrupled (at least) and backed with a greatly increased minimum wage AND felony charges for those who employ illegals.

I also had a big problem with some scumbags who defended the idea that rape is a "valid" form of sex.

To quote a real President, I feel your pain.

98. Sorry to hear that
You have to do what's right for you - you can always come back in a while & see if anything's changed. What I see is that good people are being driven away, while flamers & screamers are allowed to stick around. I think, pretty soon, this board will consist only of the flamers & they can go nuts. In my opinion, the administration needs to do a better job at tombstoning people for their behavior here - which doesn't seem to happen nearly often enough. I don't get why ClaraT, TexDem, ColoradoBlue, etc., who never seemed abusive, are tombstoned, while the worst disruptors stay. And it makes me think that it is a systematic problem. Anyway, this post will probably be deleted, but I just wanted to say that I enjoy your posts, and hope that all goes well in your life.

99. Dan, you're worth a million of those fucking assholes
I definitely recommend taking a break. I took a weekend vacation this past weekend, and it was so nice just to get away from the online drama and hullabaloo for a while. Take a break, clear your head, and just do the things you enjoy doing. DU will be poorer for your temporary abscence, but you need to do what you need to do.

I'd take you any day over several of the hateful assholes who pollute this website with their illiberal cruelty.

103. Please stay. We'll form a "Tired of Grammar Police" support group.
Ignore the faux DUers who make cracks about church and your choice of praying. But this is something we can work on:

"4: The grammar cops are after me because my hands tremor constantly and sometimes my fingers misspell words. (I would like to see them type when they can't feel the keyboard thanks to the side effects of medication.)"

You put your posts up anyway you want. This is truly tedious. Besides, the brain has spell check, I know I have one (a brain), or so I''m told (except when I talk about stolen elections to people here who think * really won in 2004;)

Stick around. You're a good writer and make your point in convincing fashion.

108. I been flamed lately too
and it never happened before. I think there are people on a RW payroll who are tag teaming on long-time DU-ers. They are staying just inside the rope so they won't get permanently kicked off the site.

I've been hitting the "Alert" button a lot more, even when they are flaming other people and I am not part of the thread at all.

I understand the frustration. The couple of times that it happened to me, I thought "Geez- why do I bother with DU, anyway?"

But please hang in there.

of DU...

Perhaps they may post something you don't like or disagree with...but other times they might blow you away...Why shut out a whole faction of others ideas? This is not an absolute science. Just pass them up when you chose to(how much effort does it take)... Why censor ideas, how much will you miss if you only hear what you want to...DU is simply a microcosm of life!!!

I personally feel DU should do away with the "ignore" icon I think its for the timid and close-minded. It takes away...However, I am also respectful, to each and his or her own.

120. Hey, I don't remember ever pounding on you, but
if I did, I really apologize. I have a brother with Parkinson's and I would never hurt anyone intentionally.

My husband corrects my geography and history constantly. I usually try to accept this as a learning moment, but sometimes, I admit, it's damned irritating.

After your post, I believe I will stop correcting spelling, though I usually only correct one in a hundred words.

Please don't let spelling come between you and DU. I promise I will stop. As for disability income, my husband has been disabled and on SS disability for 22 years. I don't know what we would do without it.

Love to you and yours. Please accept my apology if I have ever offended you.

Peace.

Then I just sit back and wait to ravage...Tolerant, sometimes, if its dictated, but usually it's more advantageous to attack the thoughtless and even more so, the smug ...This is only a fucking forum...NO one has any more validity than yourself...though so many here are so self indulgent they really believe otherwise...State your ideas and facts and fuck 'em...you'll never get a unanimous reaction...And remember, your point is being made regardless...So many come to DU to check out your opinions and thoughts and most aren't 'members' nor have user names...your points are being read...personally, I truly don't give a shit that so many here feel their opinions are more astute, articulate and eloquent, man, do I know otherwise. I find it mostly a collection of pontificators and perhaps, rarely, even some true ideologist that's what really fuels this place, So OK...Stick around...I love it, don't leave now it's just getting fun!

hear & exchange an abundance of ideas & thoughts. Selective is what one has to be here, or get lost & caught up in the gibberish...DU is important site and its not going to get any smaller...at least not until Bush is gone...Age just means it's successful and not as intimate as it once was, so does everything go...But I think we should not close ourselves off and give up, just got to take it with a gain sometimes...These boys at DU do put out a great site...and have since I first came across "The Top Ten Idiots" in Feb. 2001...It really hasn't changed that much...just some of the people have, wade through it, its the basically the same...I believe most are dedicated and its such fun to find the ones who are not, who think its simply a "chat room".
Bottom line: Don't take it all so serious as so many here mistakenly do.

Have fun!

126. Danny, I've been feeling I need a break from DU and politics, too...
...perhaps a permanent break. Seeing the way things are heading, I've been thinking about sticking my head in the sand until the end comes (in whatever form it may come).

I'm sorry about the troubles you're having and if it's any consolation, I think you're spot-on concerning your observations. About eighteen months ago I came to the conclusion that I don't "fit in" anywhere. I'm an atheist who wants the war in Iraq to stop and thinks most wars are stupid, but I don't follow left-wing dogma closely enough for some. I'm sick of nosy dogmatists of every stripe telling me what I can and cannot do/think. I'm not a pacifist. I eat meat. I play violent video games (and enjoy them). I enjoy "violent" movies. The "elitists" in the local peace group give me the hairy eyeball over these issues and the raised eyebrow when I wear my glow-in-the-dark Darth Maul T-shirt. So I'm a geek. Sue me. I like Star Wars. Bite me.

I don't believe a zygote is a person, but think that perhaps a fetus becomes a person before birth, yet I'm not willing to let non-thinking dogmatists (fundies) decide when that is. I think the matter needs scientific investigation, but it's such a hot-button issue I'm not willing to budge on how the laws stand right now. So, I'm not completely "pro-choice" or "pro-life" and this makes me something of a pariah. I'm all for stem cell research and ending your suffering.

Also, I'm sick of being disabled. School just ended and what little energy I had ended with it. I took a five-hour-long nap today and I still feel drained.

I'm ready to just say, "Fuck it!" It ain't worth the arguments. It ain't worth the family rifts. It ain't worth shit. I want to follow my own thinking and if I don't fit in anywhere, I'm not meant to. If "fitting in" means surrendering to groupthought, no thank you. Maybe I'm just not willing to contribute to the tribalism that's fucking up the world. Dogma? Screw it! Groupthought? Screw it! I just want to be myself.

152. No, it isn't
However, I never correct grammar, only spelling. I have rarely seen anyone on DU correct grammar, but quite a few of us are guilty of correcting spelling. It's almost an automatic reflex, like picking lint off a dark jacket. I had wonderful English teachers in grade school, high school and college; however, my brilliant hubbie can't spell shit. I never meant to offend anyone, however. I just thought it was something to learn, as I learn from so many other posters.

143. My friend, DanCa....
sounds like you're channeling Sir Elton, again :)

"Maybe you'll get a replacement
There's plenty like me to be found
Mongrels who ain't got a penny
Sniffing for tidbits like you on the ground"

"Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, where the dogs of society howl,
you can't plant me in your penthouse, I'm going back to my plow,
back to the howling old owl in the woods, hunting the horny-backed toad,
Oh, I've finally decided my future lies beyond the yellow-brick-road."

I hear where you are coming from, DanCa. I think a lot of this stuff is coming from the pent up anger people are feeling because of what society is becoming, and this forum gives them space to "vent." The problem is, many express that anger against the wrong people at the wrong times.

We need your voice, and if you do take a break, don't make it a long one. I've done the same thing, but I keep coming back now and then. You are a good person. Sending a prayer your way.

146. Don't Go, Dan!
I have received some snotty responses lately, too. One poster was bitching about parents who don't teach their kids. When I pointed out that most parents do the best they can, I got an acerbic, "Well, I wasn't talking about them now, was I?"

One poster the other night was going on and on about how we all have to love each other and look beyond symbols like the Confederate flag. I pointed out that George Allen had a Confederate flag pin in a yearbook photo and he's a hate-filled SOB. I was then attacked for pointing that out.

You can't win around here sometimes, but you just have to learn to put some people on ignore and never give up. I, for one, enjoy your posts and feel you make a very valuable contribution to DU.

147. I've left, a time or two, from DU in the past 5 years.
Sometimes I tire of getting beat up for not believing what 80k other people believe on DU. I have finally learned to just state my opinions and let it go. People have hurt my feelings a few times with attacks over my sometimes moderate views, but I ALWAYS get some positive folks either posting or emailing me their support. THAT is what makes DU all worth it. It's not the asshats that attack, it's the friends who turn up to support you. SOmeone was even nice enuff to give me a "heart" during the fundraiser here.

I say hang in here... it's worth it. Even for the asshats. Cuz the nice ones are way too nice to leave! :grouphug:
