Congresswoman Goes To Court To Keep Polls Open Late
Election Results To Be Delayed

UPDATED: 5:30 pm EDT May 2, 2006

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- With several problems reported at the polls Tuesday, NewsChannel5 has learned that the results will be delayed.

About 16,000 absentee votes will have to be hand counted because of a problem with optical scanners.

There were also reports of problems with the new electronic machines. Both machines are made by Diebold, Duane Pohlman reported.

Tubbs Jones said if fault is found in the manufacturers, the responsible company should pay.

"On behalf of the people of Cuyahoga County, I trust that the board will seek a reimbursement for all the people that we have to hire to count these ballots from whoever is responsible for us not being able to do that by machine," Tubbs Jones said.

2. How nice that they CAN be HAND COUNTED
Optical scanners aren't perfect, but you have a paper trail if you smell a rat. And they kick out immediately if there's a problem with stray marks. They don't solve the UNDERVOTE issue, but some people don't like any of the choices, so they leave some contests blank.

5. Wow, multiple problems again
Because of some confusion at the polling locations, citizens are being given ballots to fill out by hand, said Micheal Vu, director of the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections.

At about 6:45 a.m. at Woodberry Elementary School in Shaker Heights, a resident left the polling location after growing extremely frustrated about the process.

snip

On Cleveland's east side at Beachland polling place, supervisors who were trained to set up the machines never showed up Tuesday morning. It took about three hours for workers to figure out things for themselves and get the machines operating.

At St. Dominic's in Shaker Heights, the machines were set up but they didn't work.

A technician was sent over to troubleshoot. She received directions via phone, but couldn’t fix the problem.

At East 71st Street and Kinsman Avenue, citizens had no other choice but to leave because of all the problems. Poll workers at the library said the machines were not set up because they needed outlet converters and extension cords. No supervisor showed up to straighten out matters, WEWS reported.

6. I noticed on Channel 5 in Cleveland, they were pointing out that
basically, one county was having problems with voting machines . . . and they had several other counties report in that things were going smoothly . . . is it much of a surprise that the one county which was having all kinds of voting machine problems was the ONE heavily Dem county, and the counties which pretty much went for Bush (or barely went for Bush) were fine?

Thanks a lot . . . :eyes: :sarcasm:

8. not to be critical of STJ
but I just heard her say, It could take days to count all the absentee ballots, and Diebold should have to pay for the money it's going to cost to hire these counters.

over the course of several hours, less than 40 people could count the 18000 ballots, 1000 each pair(one to count one to referee), And I'd gladly do it for free and I'm sure many others feel a sense of civic pride and there would be no shortage of volunteers.

It's not who casts the votes, it's who counts the votes that matters.

The real problem here is Diebold and all absentee ballots should be hand counted as standard procedure and then checked against the touch screen totals to see if they are in the same percentage range...this would provide a crucial check.
