There is nothing wrong with your monitor. The DU homepage has changed.
Edited on Tue May-02-06 05:59 PM by Skinner
As many of you know, we announced two weeks ago that we were working on a new homepage for the website, and at that time we gave you a little info about what to expect. The wait is finally over, and you can see the results of our work on the DU homepage:

http://www.democraticunderground.com

Believe it or not, there is a point to all these changes. A couple months ago, we unveiled the new DU Journals functionality, which gives every DU member your own personal space where you can highlight your best postings on the DU discussion forums. (For information about DU Journals, click here.) A number of DUers have been inspired by the Journals, and have put more effort into their postings here on DU. This has given us a lot more quality stuff to highlight on our homepage.

So, we like to think of the new homepage as Phase II of the DU Journals upgrade. Now that some DUers are putting so much more effort into their writings here, we feel that we owe it to them to give their posts more prominent placement on our homepage -- and to send traffic directly to their DU Journals. Our vision for the DU homepage is to create a kind-of grassroots mega-blog, where regular people can gain a wide audience for their writings. It's a combination of discussion forum and blog.

The new homepage has much greater functionality than our old homepage. It gives you many of the features that used to only be available on the discussion forum -- and more. You now have direct access to the most popular forums. You now have the Latest and Greatest threads listed on the homepage. You now have all the navigation icons from the forums right there on the homepage. You now have a new mail notification on the homepage, with direct access to your Inbox and your My DU page. There is no longer a strict separation between the forums and the rest of the site. Everything is integrated now.

This is just the beginning

We have a lot more exciting ideas for DU, and this new homepage is just the beginning. This new homepage will give us the flexibility and power we need to take DU where we want to be this election year.

If you don't like the new homepage

We know how difficult change is for many people here, and we fully expect that there will be some confusion and consternation about the new homepage. Now that we've changed the homepage, you might not be able to find everything as quickly as you used to. That is normal.

If you don't like the DU homepage, we hope that you will give it a chance. Try it for a week. It is much more functional and user-friendly than our old homepage, and we believe that most DUers will like the new homepage more than the old one once you get used to it.

And if you really, really don't like the new DU homepage.... admit it, you didn't go to the homepage that often anyway.

How to get your posts onto the DU homepage

The most important thing you need to do to get your posts onto the DU homepage is to write good stuff -- put some effort into writing. Once you do that, here are some tips:

1. Create a DU Journal and remember to add your best posts to it. When we add original writing to our homepage, we give preference to postings that are in members' Journals.

2. It helps if your post gets at least a couple recommendations.

3. If you are putting a lot of effort into your Journal, you might want to contact a DU Admin to let us know. We can track the Journals that we like, and keep an eye out for updates to add to our homepage.

What to do about any bugs, problems, errors, etc.

If you encounter any bugs, problems, errors, or whatever, please post them in this thread to let us know so we can fix them.

Thank you so much for your patience and understanding. And most of all, thank you for being a member of our community.

Skinner, EarlG, Elad

I'm so excited, I just can't hide it. It's new, it's contemporary, it's tolerable. What more do you want? Congrats to all involved. I am too old to figure any of the pages out; still trying to figure out how to use Intellivision. But many thanks to all for your work. Stand Proud!

Looks great.

Can the text be enlarged for the Enter Discussion Forums link? It takes a little longer to realize DU is actually a discussion forum as opposed to regular blog.

8. Better organization...
Like the balance with wider space for threads/journals. But really like the greatest/latest threads on home page (or was it buried so deep on the old page that I never found it...)

Compliments to the design & development team.

9. Looks great to me!
I really love the idea of getting journal postings on the front page! It gives the whole place a very "homey" feel to see your buds on the front page.

I do have one comment... ok, complaint, about journals... Some people get just to doggone windy when it comes to writing items they want to save to their journals. Quite frankly, I can't get through many of them at all. Just can't.

I think "we the people" of DU should be able to recommend individual posts for the front page. Sometimes, and quite often really, there are threads that just blow... and in the middle lies a gem that will probably go unnoticed by most because of it's location.

Just my $.02...

Great job on the changes though. Lookin' good!

68. Eventually we are going to give you the ability to recommend replies.
In fact, it's one of our top priorities. But in order to do that, we need to take apart our existing recommendation feature and start from scratch, so it might take a while.

This is a big improvement. I had the homepage bookmarked but kept meaning to change it to the Latest Page so I could see if I had pm's and be able to access "My DU." The new page is just as I would have wished it to be redesigned. Thanks!! :hi:

70. There is no magic formula for the blogroll.
Basically, we chose the people who we knew were likely to write interesting, useful, or well-written stuff. Mostly, we've selected the names of people who have written articles for our homepage.

I'm sure there are lots of people we've overlooked. If you think anyone deserves consideration for the blogroll, please let us know. This place is so large that there are lots of people we don't even know.

I really don't have time to read a lot of blogs and journals, and wish that wasn't taking up the homepage. Sorry for being a dissenter, but I much preferred being able to get the most important news and comments of the day!

Now they're called Journals, because they are drawn from the DU Journals. (We have been posting journals as articles for at least a month now. Many of our authors now have DU Journals.) You can find the articles by looking for the blue bar in the center column that says "DU Journal".

50. Create a custom Module
Go to your journal.

Click "Journal Control Panel."

Scroll down until you find a custom module, and click "edit module"

Post all your links to your old columns in there. Or else just post a link to the old archive.

The links are all the same:

53. I Like It
When I first saw it, I thought for a second Skinner used his journal for the home page.

I like the clean layout. It's easier to read and navigate. Keep up the great work.

58. Why does everything always have to change
You techno geeks can't leave anything alone, always changing things. We never get used to something on the computer because it is always changing.

Ha Ha Ha...

:sarcasm:

Don't worry, it looks good, that is just some of the rhetoric that I hear every time I announce an upgrade to software, the users all start whining about it.

64. One more dissenter here.
Edited on Wed May-03-06 07:12 AM by mcscajun
I really liked the old homepage, didn't spend all that much time visiting journals, so when I did it was by my choice. I really love the Random Journal button for just that reason. I can see it's still there, btw. :) When I got curious, sure, I checked out the "top journals" and then read of few of the "lesser known" ones.

My biggest peeve is with the placement of the Latest and the Greatest to a sidebar, it necessitates a much, MUCH smaller font size than some of us can handle on a regular basis. Some of us, many of us according to many polls here at DU, aren't as young as we used to be, and the smaller font for the Headline Articles is more than annoying, it's inconvenient for our older eyes.

And The Latest should be ahead of the The Greatest, IMHO. Immediacy should precede popularity.

65. The Latest and Greatest weren't on the old homepage.
They are a new addition to the homepage. Maybe we can do something about the font sizes.

If you visit the Latest Page and the Greatest Page directly, you will see that their fonts are the same as they have always been.

a journal posting go alongside the link that shows the number of comments?

Yeah, we're all about the forums, but the part of DU that is regularly published pieces is more important than that people can get to the forums quickly.

80. OK, my comment on the graphics:
Sorry, but the graphics don't say "Home Page". I like the content changes, particularly the frame on the right-- that's a great addition. Being able to navigate almost anywhere from the Home page is smart and efficient, and this was lacking in the old design.

However, there is a lot of "stuff" on the page, and it is text-heavy- there ought to be some visual hierarchy, starting with the site logo with maybe (optional, really optional) a 'mission statement' or credo up top-- an identifier for anyone stumbling across it on the net, and for the "democraticunderground.com' web-brand.

In spite of its popularity, there are still lots of people who haven't been to the site or are unfamiliar with it (some are liberals who are my friends). I found your site when web-surfing... I hadn't heard of it before (true). What your old page had that is missing from this one is the prominent graphic banner (logo)at the top, and that said with images (often humorous) who you guys are and what you are about. This is part of what (I think) a home page is supposed to do. And I liked that you changed the image periodically- it was quite funny. It 'read' like a home page. This design is so text-heavy, it is a bit oppressive.

It's just my opinion, anyway. I'd love the site even if you made it magenta (but please don't!).

89. This would be my criticism, as well
There's valuable exposure for lots of good writing, but it comes at the expense of....the pow? It's so heavy with text that it doesn't appear as newsy, and that's my own personal jones talking. Damn intellectual elitists ;)

I do appreciate the icon links at the top. That is more convenient.

Edited on Wed May-03-06 02:59 PM by Dem2theMax
I want the old page back. I can be a whiner for a day, yes? WAAAAAAAA. LOL?

Seriously, it looks ugly to me. I'm sorry. I know tons of work was put into this page. But if I were a first time visitor and this is what I saw, I wouldn't be back. Home page was my favorite place.
No longer. Sigh.

Edited to add: I feel such a negative vibe from the page, I don't even want to go there.
Which means no more DU. Double sigh.

I like the new home page a lot, but I wish you'd list the top latest breaking news items on the home page. I use DU as a news source, and I think listing those stories there would be a good service.
