Bush International Airport???
I was just watching the news and a small Continental Jet blew two tires on takeoff and had to circle back and land in Houston. The person reading the prompter called it "Bush International."

I have no idea whether this is the major airport in Houston, but I was under the impression that a president had to be dead before you started naming things after him.

I assume this is named after Poppy and not George W. Nonetheless the only place I would find the Bush name acceptable is on a bedpan.

Yeah, I know Reagan wasn't dead before they changed the name of National Airport to Reagan Airport, but the Republicans granted him Sainthood. I don't think that Poppy or Junior have attained Saint status yet.

Naming national locales after the Bush's is adding insult to injury. And anyone who thinks those names can't be dropped is wrong.

Cape Canaveral was renamed Cape Kennedy until the rednecks went berserk, whereupon it is once again called Cape Canaveral.

Hey, King George. You may not be around to see it, but someday, every septic system in the country will be called the George pit. Enjoy your legacy.

2. The first thing I would do if I were in charge of Florida, would be
to enact a law that said "If you didn't pay for it and you are still alive, it won't be named after you." They do that shit all the time down here.

19. Well, let's make some exceptions in FL. You know those porta-potties?
We don't need any constitutional amendment, or even the approval of a board of county commissioners to start calling them JEBs.

Hell, common usage influences the meaning of any word. When we're headed to the can, why not just say, "Be right back. I gotta take a JEB."

Who knows, we may not be able to accomplish much more than preventing him from being the next "Great Decider" of the U.S. It's hard to get to be prez when everyone considers you to be either dangerous or a joke.

3. And we locals call it
Edited on Tue May-02-06 06:50 PM by WolverineDG
"Intercontinental" if we have to distinguish it from Hobby or Ellington Field. If we're just referring to IAH, we say "Houston," as in "I have a connecting flight in Houston."

4. I don't care what they call it. It's still Houston Intercontinental.
They also named the Anchorage airport (ANC) after that POS Ted Stevens. And don't get me started on DCA. They can't put you on a stamp until you're dead; same rule should apply to airports.

5. Actually, it's Bush Inter-Continental Airport.
Nevertheless, you don't have to be dead to have an airport named for you. Just funnel a whole mess of money.

8. I think the difference is that it's not a government-controlled entity.
The airport is, I believe, a quasi-public entity, and probably isn't held to the same naming etiquette that things like highways are (that's also the reason they got away with renaming National Airport). The airport in DC will always be National Airport to me, and in Houston it'll always be Houston Intercontinental. It irritates the living shit out of me that they renamed those.

17. The space center is called the Kennedy Space Center, but the
cape has reverted to Cape Canaveral.

And in keeping with "Traditional Republican Values" the nearby town of Cocoa Beach is "get laid" paradise where even a eunuch can get lucky. It's been this way since our space programs began and it makes Las Vegas look like the Vatican.

16. I recall the renaming of Orange County Airport many moons ago.
I was flying from L.A. to Las Vegas with a stop at Orange County Airport.

The next day I was flying back, we had the same stopover, and the pilot said we were landing at John Wayne Airport. Everyone on board laughed, but he wasn't joking.

The name of Orange County Airport had been changed to John Wayne Airport. It's still called that.

I guess the moral to that story is that there's nothing in the world more tasteless, stupid, or nauseating than a right-wing Republican.

(I liked many of John Wayne's movies, but this wasn't a tribute to him. It was a tribute to wingnut Republican insanity.)

...it has this disgrace of a statue in one of the concourses.

The first time I passed it, it was all I could to to resist going to one of the shops and buying a bunch of fruit and markers to deface it with. The residents of the hellhole that is Houston have yet one more thing to be ashamed of themselves for.
