Serious item - Houston plane in trouble
Both tires blown out on left side of plane. Circling airport to burn up fuel. First attempt waved off by tower. Going to try again about ten minutes.

7. Reporting on this is poor
Both tires on the left main gear blew out and are shredded. Media can't get that right.

Has a very long runway, winds are moderate, and should be able to handle this ok with careful braking and thrust reverse.

Good thoughts with the pilot and passengers.

31. No...
The pilots in this case would try to land with a slight bank angle to the right, much as one would execute a crosswind landing, to keep the blown tires off of the ground as long as possible.

11. Continental Express - I hope they land safely
We underestimate the skills of these pilots - they are so well trained and they really seem to step up in these situations. It kills me when they have to make concessions in pay and benefits, because they deserve a lot.

16. I wonder why they didn't divert to an air base.
my husband grew up on air bases, and he remembers
many emergency landings of commercial planes.

They have the equipment and the personnel...

Oops. I think I answered my own question.

23. while I certainly pray that they land safely
I can't help but wonder about routine maintenance. Shouldn't a weakness in the tires have been caught and tires replaced before takeoff?

27. Often this is not a maintinence issue
The crash of the Concorde not too long ago was a result of debris on the runway shredding the tires, which then got ingested by the engines.

The fact that both tires, and not just 1, were destroyed is a good clue that this incident was most likely caused by some other factor (something on the runway?)

Oh well, we'll wait for the official NTSB report.

Hope this answers your question.

25. The unsung heros of the situation - the engineers at Embraer
This situation could have gone very differently if the landing gear had collapsed, as happens sometimes in these situations. A truly great job of design by the Brasillian Aircraft company.

Not to take away from the piloting of course.

:D
