"Dear Lamar Alexander" (Re: our national anthem) |
|
Dear Lamar Alexander,
It has come to my attention that you are sponsoring a bill to restrict the National Anthem (ie the Star Spangled Banner) to the English language. In my humble opinion, The Star Spangled Banner--henceforth SSB--does not have a language problem (except for the antiquated American English--what does "spangled" mean in this context anyway?).
However, the SSB does have a more crucial problem: it is far too high in musical key to be sung by anyone who is not an opera singer or Barry Gibb. Most people risk vocal injury when attempting to reach the high note on "the rocket's red glare" especially in the key of A flat major, the official SSB musical key of the Olympics and major-league baseball.
Sir, it is my belief that a national anthem should be truly democratic in a democratic nation like our own. The anthem should be able to be sung by everyone, regardless of native language or vocal range. Therefore, I propose that you sponsor a bill which will lower the SSB by an interval of a third, thus bringing the anthem to the key of F major, which can be fairly easily accessed by most vocal ranges.
Thank you for your time and attention in this matter.
