Tsunami warning after Tonga quake
Magnitude-8.0 Quake Strikes Near Tonga 38 minutes ago

BANGKOK, Thailand - A magnitude-8.0 earthquake struck early Thursday near the South Pacific nation of Tonga, the U.S. Geological Survey said. A tsunami warning was issued for Fiji and New Zealand.

The temblor, classified by the USGS as a "great" quake, struck 95 miles south of Neiafu, Tonga, and 1,340 miles north-northeast of Auckland, New Zealand.

The U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued the tsunami warning but said it was not known whether the quake generated a potentially deadly giant wave.

3. waves
If a large-energy wave was generated, it won't "show" much until the valley interacts
with the shallower ocean floor nearer land masses. This was very well captured in
the films from Banda Aceh last year. Sometimes in really deep water, a tsunami will
appear to be just a swell, but moving *really* fast! What are the birds and animals
doing? They seem to know...

8. More to the point, what are DU's conspiracy theorists doing!
As soon as they claim Bush caused the quake to distract attention from Colbert, we'll know the West Coast is screwed.
