I surrender - I give up - I quit
I am giving up on posting the daily Court filings from the Libby case,

A bunch of us thought that it might be good to have a place to research these like here:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=358x3589

Over the past few days I have had several people try to help with getting a location/procedure in place for hosting these PDF files as they are made available for the public from the Libby trial. I would like to say thank you to those DU'ers, but either I am too stupid with computers, or the sites have some kind of hang up with hosting large PDF files.

This is my last distress call on this if I can not get a resolution - AN EASY ONE THAT WORKS - then I will let this drop and the people here that could use this stuff will have to go elsewhere or not get it at all.

So if there is anyone who can help me with this I would appreciate it - also several other DU'ers will appreciate this.

- here is my situation

I have several PDF files saved to my computer, I do not have a web site, server or anything else except a plain ole desk top computer with windows XP.

These PDF's range 1 - 2MB a piece, eventually there may be hundreds of PDF's available that I would like to have ALL OF THEM AVAILABLE and linked here at DU.

My problem has been either - the files exceed the space, or I get too many downloads from the host site to make this a viable option, when this too many download thing happens it shuts the files down.

So I need a viable option that will let me host several upon several 1 - 2MB PDF files from computer.

Remember I am stupid if you are responding to this and you are a tech person - you guys say stuff that goes right over my head.

People have sent me all over the internet and I have wasted all of my time, if people would like to help - they are gonna have to hold my hand on this - I am sorry, but this kind of thing is hard to understand/ do over a chat board.

I am even willing to pm someone with my work phone number so that I can discuss this in person - THAT IS HOW IMPORTANT THESE FILINGS ARE TO DU

Please people don't let this potential source of excellence research on Plame/Libby fall by the wayside.

Please DU I am on my hands and knees begging you - I am desperate - I am at my last straw with this.

Please.....

Is it possible that DU has a space where you could upload the PDF files to?

2. Have you tried contacting the mods here?
Maybe they could host them. After that try asking http://whiterosesociety.org

100 1MB files is not very large by today's standards.

Just upload them there and it'll be kept online as long as there is at least one download per thirty days. And it's a very quick server as well.

Thank you STB for all you are doing. We really appreciate it ~ :hi:

I've grinded my teeth over this problem and cursed those who've chosen pdf for the format. I mean, seriously, is that the ONLY 'ware by which to scan and post to the web? IT SUCKS!!!!

helpfully listed by Nomad559. If you can do that, and have the bandwidth in your Internet connection to upload them there, that would help.

One problem with these files is that PDFs made from scans tend to be larger. For example, on the Plame page at http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=358&topic_id=3589&mesg_id=3589 these two files illustrate the difference:
  • 04/05/2006 Memorandum Opinion - 13 pages (562 kb) - scanned document

  • 04/05/2006 RESPONSE by USA as to I. LEWIS LIBBY re 68 Third MOTION to Compel DISCOVERY UNDER RULE 16 AND BRADY - 39 pages (204 kb)

  • See? The first example, which is a scanned document, is a third as big as the other one in terms of page-length (13 pages vs. 39), but it's more than twice as big in computer file size (562 kb vs. 204 kb). That's because a PDF file of a scanned document contains a picture of each page, which is generally going to be larger than a PDF that contains actual editable text.

Click the "T" icon in the Acrobat Reader toolbar and you'll see that in the scanned document you can't select the text (because it's just a picture of text), whereas in the one that's not scanned, you can select and copy text, and even paste it into another document.

If you're not creating the PDF files yourself, I don't know of a way to reduce the file size of the scanned documents. For the non-scanned documents (like the second one listed above), you could conceivably copy the text and then paste it into something like Word or, even better, Notepad. The steps would be these:
    1. In Adobe Acrobat Reader, Control-A on a Windows machine to select all the text in the document.
    2. Control-C (still in Acrobat Reader) to copy it.
    3. In Word or Notepad, Control-V to paste the text.
    4. Clean up as necessary and save the file as Plain Text.

Since the non-scanned PDFs are relatively small, you don't save all that much by doing this. But it would help some. For example--by selecting all the text in the second file listed above (04/05/2006 RESPONSE by USA as to I. LEWIS LIBBY re 68 Third MOTION...) and pasting it into Notepad, I reduced the file size from 204 kb to 80 kb. It's somewhat laborious, though, because the lines break oddly so you'd have to delete a lot of extraneous carriage returns to make it look right.

Hope this info is helpful and not confusing. PM me or post to this thread if you have questions.

edited to add link to Nomad559's post listing free hosting sites.

21. I wish I could help but, I'm on dial-up and pdf files KILL ME!!!
It takes twenty freakin' minutes just to load a 30-page document and I HATE IT!!!

If I had unlimited time and a faster connection, I'd jump all over that WITH YOU. I would.

I'm a novice re zipping and copying such files (I've torn my hair out trying to do that).

Surely, there is someone here who can zip/zap that material and pin it up for easy access. I wish it was me. *frown*

But, please do NOT give up. Someone here has the patience and wherewithall to help. Maybe, they're just not here right now because of work or other demands.

Meanwhile, I just want to tell you "I APPRECIATE YOUR DEDICATION AND ALL YOUR WORK ON THIS MATTER". I'll repeat cause, seriously, people DO NEED to hear such things more than once, "I APPRECIATE YOUR DEDICATION AND ALL YOUR WORK ON THIS MATTER!!!!"

Thank you!!!
