I think Pat Buchanan should run as the "America First" candidate
in '08. One poll, I think it was Rasmussen, said that in a general election if a candidate ran on a platform of keeping illegal aliens out of this country that they would come in second with the GOP running a poor third! and the Democrats winning. I watched Pat B. on some talk show the other day and he is among the most passionate about building a wall across the border, ect. and while I disagree 100% with him--his presence on such a ticket, I think, would hurt the Republicans tremendously.

2. "There is a final reason I support George W. Bush.
A presidential election is a Hatfield-McCoy thing, a tribal affair. No matter the quarrels inside the family, when the shooting starts, you come home to your own."
- Patrick J. Buchanan, 2004

4. Given that he ran in the general election in 2000
and wound up costing Gore the election by virtue of him being o the infamous butterfly ballot, I think that is a very odd thing for him to say.

3. Pat also was against going into Iraq.
Combine Iraq withdrawal with clamping down on ILLEGAL immigration and doing everything to keep jobs here, another Pat project, and you get a package appealing to many voters. Now if Pat could just come up with a plan to lower gasoline prices, he'd have it made!

5. You mean, officially, as the candidate for the America First Party?
Seriously -- there is such a party: http://www.americafirstparty.org/

I think if all the right-wing third parties (AFP, Constitution, AIP, IAP, etc.) all got together to back Pat, it could certainly have a Nader-like influence, just from the opposite side of the political fence.

7. As entertaining as I think it would be, I don't think he'll run again
As an independent or a republican. He's too independent of a thinker to ever be let back into the GOP as a candidate, and too outside the mainstream to pick up a lot of independent voters. Also, he's getting old and just may be happy writing columns for a living.
