LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The Minuteman Project border patrol group began a 10-day cross-country caravan on Wednesday to Washington, D.C., demanding tougher immigration controls with Mexico and "a fence that will last 150 years."

Fueled by frustration over a Latino boycott and marches that brought almost a million people onto U.S. streets on Monday, the Minutemen said their drive to the U.S. capital would also highlight the jobs it said black Americans were losing to low-wage immigrant workers.

"When you have 1 million illegal aliens marching on the streets, that is a declaration of domination over the United States. And that is not acceptable," said Jim Gilchrist, who founded the volunteer border control group in Southern California a year ago.

"Our cause is not a racial cause. It is a rule-of-law cause," Gilchrist told a news conference held in a predominantly black Los Angeles neighborhood.
