SANTORUM: "$100 rebates the BEST way to address gas price issue"

Charging that Senate Democrats are "not particularly willing to do anything this year on energy," U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum visited the Harrisburg area yesterday to tout proposed gas rebates.

Santorum, R-Pa., called the $100 gas tax rebate included in the Gas Price Relief and Rebate Act unveiled Sunday by Senate Republicans "immediate relief" for Pennsylvania drivers, who he said pay the nation's highest gas tax at more than 31 cents a gallon.

"We believe the rebate is the best short-term way to address this issue," Santorum said at an afternoon news conference at the Sheetz convenience store in the 3600 block of Paxton Street in Swatara Twp.

1. Meanwhile, many including Republicans think it's stupid and pandering
and a desperate looking move on the part of Frist and the likes of Santorum.

Is he in THAT much trouble?

4. You gotta admit, the plan is simply brilliant
Think about it.

The Republicans put together a plan to give all taxpayers $100, in late August. And they include a provision to drill ANWR, assuring that Dems will vote against it.

So, lets see.

There is no other way to describe this as "buying votes", and assuring that their opponents will vote against it.

They can attack dems who voted against it, and promote republicans who voted for it.

And it comes about two months before the election.

It is, literally, using taxpayer money to buy votes.

16. Well, it's AUDACIOUS.
It's so clearly a bribe from the public treasury to keep us from putting pressure on the oil companies and their hirelings, the republicans, that you just have to applaud the sheer, unabashed evil of it. It's the morality of pirates who tell us to thank them for leaving us our underwear.

7. Would it be $100 per person a month or $100 per household?
Or would it be every two weeks?

I'd accept $100 per person a month, but I'd prefer it every two weeks.

Anyone know the answer?

Edited on Wed May-03-06 06:10 PM by TahitiNut
Those on fixed incomes or the long-term unemployed aren't filing tax returns. What they should do, if they want to be 'fair and balanced' (which they don't), is process the rebate through the DMV's in various states, granting the rebate against privately-owned (not commercial) vehicles.

In any event, it's stupid. It shovels out money to the oil companies and increases the national debt.

9. Tax me, then send it back, so I can give it to the oil companies.
Worst fucking bribe EVER. Don't bribe me with $100 of my own money, thinking that I won't notice you letting the oil companies gouge me ten times that much this year, and Santorum letting them use our artic lands for free on top of it all. It'll take at least $200, from Santorum's own funds to bribe me.

38. Santorum is so full of crap
He should never have let the DOE move its Bruceton Fischer-Tropsch Lab (Coal to Gasoline) and Pilot Plant from Bruceton PA (his old Congressional District) to Morgantown WV.

My Gosh - a walk from Consol's Lab (with a Fischer-Tropsch bench scale and mini-pilot plant facility) and just up the hill from Clairton Works (USS's Coke Chemical Plant) and just up PA 885 from the Neville Island complex.

What a stupid jerk - and he lies to cover up his own screw ups.

And this $100 is borrowing from our grandkids for what, 6 weeks of the difference between the old price and the new price.

He'd be better off putting the money into Ethanol, and bio-diesel, and Western Pennsylvania Fischer-Tropsch coal to gasoline, and raising CAFE to Mini-Cooper levels.

Michigan Democrat Debbie Stabenow proposed “a $500 rebate but pay for it by cutting the tax breaks for oil companies.” She said, “We should instead put that money back in the pockets of the people paying the high gas prices.”
