Will Romano Prodi Ask the Tough Questions About Italian Niger Forgeries?
There is finally a change in leadership in Italy as Berlusconi has relented in his challenge of the elections. A question for the new Prime Minister, Romano Prodi. Will he call for a review of the official Italian story of the Niger Forgeries? Josh Marshall addresses the inconsistencies between a recent London Times story representing the Berlusconi government's version of events and what we have learned through a more thorough examination (see the Constitution in Crisis).
There are many questions that need to be asked of the Italian government and its intelligence services which provided the Bush Administration the "evidence" it sought to make the case for war against Iraq. Will Prodi be brave enough to conduct this inquiry remains to be seen.
I can also report on some good news. Yesterday, I appeared at a bipartisan press conference with leaders from the House and Senate, and the Judiciary Committees from both chambers, to announce our commitment to renew and strengthen the Voting Rights Act. While this is only a first step, I am encouraged that leaders from both parties have expressed a commitment to pass this legislation before the end of the 109th Congress.
