Justice Alito, get used to it, move on
I'm not happy about it but I've not heard anything that will defeat his nomination. Remember Clarence Thomas? I'm worried its a distraction at this point. Abramoff, House leadership...Iran.

Even if EVERYTHING in your common sense dictates that he couldn't possible "not remember".

first call or e-mail your reps and let them know whats on your mind. Seems that this is a no win situation. Focus on Alito like they want us to (go read freep republic) or keep Abramoff, House leadership, Iran on the front burner. I personally think Alito is already decided.

3. I think you're probably right. The only thing that could
eliminate him is if, during these hearings, the RW hear something that convinces them that he WON'T try to overturn Roe. If they get that impression, they will inundate the Pub Senators to vote him down!

Other than that, I see nothing that can stop him.

He's not coming off like a Bork. He's a conservative republican. If we had a Dem in the White House I'd want the farthest left liberal around. And I'd expect that person to be approvee. Even if s/he was as far left as Bork was right.

It sure would be nice if we could stop talking about abortion in this country for a few years. We might make some progress. It seems right now that's all it comes down to...for both sides. Shame.

51. But Democrats dont appoint "far left" judges- we appoint moderates.
The other huge difference is that Bush is the most unpopular, dishonest & corrupt President in history. If we had a prez as corrupt, criminal and unpopular as Bush, then we should not expect confirmation either.

Alito is a facist and a racist- Democrats dont appoint "far left" judges- we appoint moderates.

Caving in to Bush and "playing fair" with him has never worked. Can you show me when it has?

Alito is a liar and a racist, and should not be awarded a life-time appointment.

I'll assume that Democrats who enable him or defend his confirmation have no problem with his positions.

Know thine enemy. And your history.

Congress has moved further right than the country. If you want your country back, find out why and fix it.

Complaining about the Alito nomination by calling him names is not productive.

Bush is indeed the most dishonest & corrupt Prez in history- he beats Nixon or Grant. You act like this is some kind of "looney" statement. It is not. Who is, if not Bush?

"Congress has moved further right than the country"

I agree with that statement- which is probably why it appears to you that Clinton's (or some hypothetical Democrat in the future?) appointees were "far left" when they were really moderates.

Is civil rights and privacy "far-left?" Or is it moderate?

And this is a message board and I'm a private citizen, so I can factually label Bush & his cronies as facists and racists all day long- even if the media and some Democrats are afraid to be blunt & truthful in that respect.

80. I refuted everything you said
we can argue the relative honesty of Nixon (or Johnson if you will) all day. I'll take Johnson as the most dishonest. Or maybe Nixon. Of course, I'll have to get out all my reference material to site chapter and verse but Johnson's destruction of Olds (sp? liberal seeking reappointment to federal office), keeping any civil rights legislation from getting through the Senate for what? 10 years? His outrageous manipulation of legislation regulating the oil and natural gas industry, fixing elections (yeah, MUCH better proof than we have on Bush) then we can talk about the war.

Of course, my guess is Johnson and Nixon might not come close to the corruption of other presidents, I just happen to have studied them more (history major here) and lived it. Read Caro's biography on Johnson, it will give you a good start. Then we'll talk.

Let's talk about racism and sexism. I was there...in the 50s when racism was acceptable...and sexism...sheesh...I was one of the first 100 women in the history of my state to graduate from law school. The things I could tell you about sexism. And I participated as a protestor in the civil rights movement. What you gonna do to all those people who were racist then? Call them names? Yeah, boy, that helps.

This is politics. They won, we lost. Why don't you continue to call Alito and Bush names, then go join the Green party and once again, we'll split the liberal vote so another religiously insane president wins.

Or, better yet, learn something about the history of your country and its current political climate.

Alito belives that the pResident should have unlimited power in "wartime". That is reason enough to disqualify him right there.
He does not believe in upholding the Constitution that he would be sworn to uphold.

We should fight Alito. We should FILIBUSTER. This is what it is for.

Snoopergate, torturegate and lying us into war are all good reasons why people like Alito should never be allowed near the Supreme Court bench, because he would legalize all of those things and more.

He would also vote to repeal Roe v. Wade, of course.

Move on to the unlimited presidential powers that Bushco will ram through with their hand picked boys on the court, move on to rolling back the clock to pre-Roe v Wade, move on and let the disappearance our civil rights proceed apace, move on to more endless wars for profit and oil, move more lies from our president. Yes indeed, let's move on:eyes:

Distraction, is that what you think that this is, Jesus H. Christ on a pogo stick friend, this man is waaaay beyond distraction, in his nomination is embodied the turning point of our country from a democracy to a dictatorship, and you think we should just move on! How in the hell do you expect any of these multitude of scandals to be brought to justice when the highest court in the land is packed with cronies and Neo-Cons?

And the excuse that any other conservative justice would do the same thing simply doesn't hold water. Exhibit A, the woman that Alito is hoping to replace, Sandra Day O'Connor. A woman, nominated by Reagan, who is a moderate on the court. I would much rather have somebody like her on board rather than Alito, and if we put a halt to the Alito nomination we can force Bush to nominate such a moderate. But noooo, you would rather have the Dems roll over and piss all over themselves like a whipped pup rather than put up a fight.

Sorry friend, I don't and never will buy that line of reasoning. We have the power of the filibuster, we can force Bush to bring in a better candidate. I say it is high time that the Democrats fought back and did so. Anything else is simply selling out this country to the corporatistas and fascists. You may be comfotable with that, but I'm certainly not.

I wouldn't presume! Besides, this posturing seems to make you happy and righteously indignant, and I wouldn't want to deprive you of your joy. You're gonna need it. Cheers.

When I said "Cheers," that meant I'm done with you. Should have been more clear there.

65. Why apologize for being absolutely right?
DEMs will give Bush exactly what he wants- I think we both agree on that- we just had a different way of expressing that fact.

Thanks for giving me the last word- cheers.

So remind me again - where is it that we're moving?

Rusher opens papers about Alito's alumni group

A request by the Congressional Research Service was denied. Rusher did give the New York Times permission to go through his papers in November, after Alito's nomination was announced. A subsequent article in the newspaper concluded that Rusher's files as well as records at a Princeton library gave "no indication" that Alito was a major donor or active leader in the alumni group.

Rusher agreed Wednesday to give the Judiciary Committee access to his papers if it would end the fussing.

48. I have to admit, that I'm somewhat prepared for Alito to be comfirmed
but thats because there are certain so-called "Democrats" that are going to stab the rest of the Democrats in the Senate in the back, and we all who they are, because they have done it before. Plus all of the Repugs are going to march in unison, and all vote to confirm Alito. But I'm not going to move on, I mean I've still haven't moved on from the 2000 election, and probably never will. Through I have to add that I'm willing to bet that his comfirmation vote on the floor of the Senate will probably be very close, probably just as close as the Clarence Thomas vote, and that speaks volumes in a very bad way.

58. I am afraid you are right.
I hate it, but I it will take a miracle to prevent his confirmation and I don't see one coming. Our only hope is that we can gain leverage in 2006 and slowly begin to get our country back.

63. Probably, unless Feingold can come up w/a
silver bullet. And he's sure trying! We'd have to get all Dems, plus 5 Republicans voting against him... and that isn't going to happen.

69. I'd settle for a party line NO vote.
I oppose Alito for the simple fact that the people that I hate love the guy. He is not, however, going to give him the rope to hang himself. On the other hand, I would like to see the Democrats hang together and oppose this guy.

Even if he is confirmed and--unless a significant number of Republicans cross over--it seems like he will be confirmed, I would like to see the Democrats offer a strong protest.

Is that too much to ask?

One that has used it's powers to "appoint" a President, is a "distraction"??

Anyway, you don't seem to have much of a problem with him, so who cares, right?

76. It would take something like personally killing babies for him to go down

It's done.

I hope (but don't expect) the Dems to fight all the way and vote against him, but in the end, he will be on the court. This was decided the day GW was re-selected.

It is a tragedy, a crime, possibly the beginning of the end of democracy in this nation, but it will happen.

83. Unfortunately, yes. Focus on *K Street Project*, Patriot Act,
tax cuts, etc. The dems are doing what they can but I doubt it'll be enough. These hearings are a gift to the administration by taking the spotlight off K Street and the issues carried over the holiday AND by giving the republicans every chance to say they're mainstream and abortion is a horror.
