Poll: Lieberman not hurt by Iraq stance, Rell still tops

By Cara Rubinsky, Associated Press Writer | May 2, 2006

HARTFORD, Conn. --U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman's support for the war in Iraq has not hurt him among Connecticut voters and Republican Gov. M. Jodi Rell's approval rating remains high, according to a new Quinnipiac University poll released Tuesday.

The poll shows Lieberman, a Democrat, with a 59 percent approval rating among registered voters, compared with 63 percent in a similar poll in February.

The poll also shows that in a primary, Lieberman would beat Greenwich businessman Ned Lamont 65 percent to 19 percent, compared with 68 percent to 13 percent gap in the February poll.

Lieberman's numbers remain high despite his perceived closeness with President Bush, who has a 25 percent approval rating in Connecticut, according to the poll. The survey also found that 61 percent of voters oppose the Iraq war but only 15 percent would vote for a candidate based only on his or her stance on the issue.

The poll found 90 percent of voters have not heard enough about Lamont to form an opinion.

intelligence, as CT is a highly educated state. Or may be its something in the water.

I disgusted that Lieberman could get nominated after his surrender very early in Florida, his
uncritical support of * and his overall inability to make logical distinctions. Specifically,
Lieberman gave a pious speech chastising Clinton for his lapse with Monica. Yet he failed to
give a similar moral assessment of * insane war of aggression. Oops, Lieberman supports the
ar in Iraq, how silly of me to expect that he would recognize the immorality of killing people
"preemptively."

3. The trick is in the polling technique...
...which polls all Connecticut voters regardless of party affiliation.

Other polls (mentioned on DailyKos and MyDD over the past month) have shown that Holy Joe has dropped dramatically in popularity among Democrats, but has more than picked up that support among Republicans.

In other words, voters of both stripes are coming to realize that Lieberman is really a Republican running as a Democrat, and are reacting to him as such.

(BTW, a Rasumssen poll shows a completely different picture of the primary -- Lieberman is still ahead, but Lamont has drawn within striking range.)

5. Down down down
This poll also shows that Joe's support is slipping. He's down 4 points since February and the campaign hasn't even really gotten into full swing yet. Just wait, Ned's going to give him hell!
