My friend is afraid to go see "Brokeback Mountain."
Edited on Wed Jan-11-06 03:19 PM by Cyrano
I asked a friend if he wanted to go see "Brokeback Mountain" this weekend and he replied, "What if someone we know sees us there?"

Thinking that I might have missed something, I asked, "What the fuck are you talking about?"

"People might think we're gay," he mumbled.

This is someone I've known for years and I was totally taken back by his comment. He was evidently under the impression that either every guy who went to see this film was gay, or would be mistaken for being gay.

It would seem that the fundies' homophobic wars have succeeded beyond their wildest dreams. I get the feeling that my friend wouldn't be caught dead near any movie complex where "Brokeback Mountain" was playing, even if he was going to see something else.

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

2. I am pretty sure that if someone thinks he is gay
it would be the nicest compliment he could receive.

3. yup, homophobia it is.
don't feel so bad. my husband suffers from it too. he's from a very rural area of west texas. it's taken a few years, but i think i am finally starting to get through to him. i guess you can't really do the same with your friend, because his homophobia would probably cause him to think you were gay and trying to "change" him. it really is sad, what these fundamentalist nutjobs have done to perfectly good people.

10. We do live in a homophobic society
It's sad but true. I wanted to go to an art gallery with a classmate but he refused, saying that "only queers go to that". I've a big fan of art and music, but to say that is totally inappropriate.:eyes:

32. That's how my music career got killed.
All I wanted to do was be a music teacher, but the people around me- despite all the talent I tried to show them I had- only ridiculed me for it.

We are doomed as a country. Art and music are "gay".

We're doomed.

12. I don't think we can blame bushco this time
A friend of mine who I have an Academy Award prediction contest every year see every nominated movie together. He said to me a few weeks ago Q:

"We have to go into the theatre seperately, sit in different rows, don't acknowledge each other and leave seperately."

I replied, "What the fuck! I'll see it by myself. You are an idiot!"

I have known him all my life and I have never been more disgusted with him and let him know it.

BUT.....He does not like bush and his cronies and although a he is a republican never bought into the bush-cheaney slander during the campaign about gay marraige.

13. Remember the "Sanford and Son" Show?
Bubba saw Lamont and Rollo going in a gay bar together and tells Fred that Lamont is gay (they went in by mistake), so later Bubba and Fred go to investigate and Lamont and Rollo see Fred and Bubba going into the gay bar together and you know the rest.

Great show.

14. Funny/Sad story OT Bruce Springsteen Devils and Dust concert
When I went to the Devils and Dust concert this year with my bro he got shook up when he saw a couple of guys kissing .
He said "Danny why are there so many gay people here." I didn't know what to say. Funny thing is I didn't pick up on it. I dont usually pay attention to what people are doing unless it comes within my general vicinity. I had to laugh he was so homophobic he spent the entire concert looking over his shoulder literally I would have said something but I was busy enjoying myself listening to the music and watching him make a fool out of himself.

Question what is the plot of Brokeback mountain? It's a western correct?

16. What people (might think you're gay)? The other people in the
audience? Would your friend automatically assume -they- are all gay?
And anyhow, what if somebody DID think that? What're they going to do,
tell everyone they saw him in the theater so you must be gay and THEY were at the movie too? Sheesh...

a gay co-worker of mine told me that gay people can usually tell when another person is gay. I asked her if it was a "ga-dar", she laughed and said, yep.

17. Does he want to see it?
If he wants to see it but is afraid of someone seeing him there then he has a problem with his identity. I'm not afraid to see it, I just don't want to. If I wanted to see it I wouldn't give a damn about what anyone says and just go. Seeing a movie does not make you gay. What a ridiculous way to think.

The movie is billed as a gay Cowboy movie but in reality the main characters are SHEEP HERDERS!!! Who cares if they are gay, their sheep herders for God's sake!!!

26. Maybe you could tell him about all the fun he'll have seeing who else is
gay, I mean, only gay folks would go to that movie after all. Actually, it's been billed as a gay cowboy movie, but the guys are shephards - you know, just like Jesus.

Maybe he'd feel better if he took a girl along? Make it look like a date? You take one too and then he could sit in between 2 girls. Of course, if he starts crying at the end (and the odds of that are pretty damn good, I've seen it) the girls might think him a little less of a man or get really into him being so sensative - so pick your cover girls carefully.

29. I refuse to see it
Why? Because it's a 'love story.' In other words its a chick flick (except that the chicks are both guys). I avoid chick flicks whenever possible, usually only seeing them with the woman I am currently dating. I'm not dating anyone right now, so i don't have to see any chick flicks.
