First, this made me laugh. Then it made me really, really angry.

INDIANA DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY ISSUES WARNING ABOUT MECHANICAL BULLS AT AFTER-PROM PARTIES

The Indiana Department of Homeland Security is warning Indiana high schools and others involved in planning after-prom parties to check for the proper certification if a mechanical bull is part of the night’s attractions.

“In recent years, mechanical bulls have become increasingly popular for after-prom parties at Indiana high schools,” said IDHS Executive Director Eric Dietz. “However, a new state law that took effect last July includes additional requirements before the bulls can be approved for use. We want to make sure schools are aware of this new law before they hire a company to provide a mechanical bull that may not be approved.”

During last year’s prom season, state law only required that the companies providing the mechanical bulls be registered with the state. However, the new law now requires mechanical bulls to be inspected and certified in order to be approved for operation by the state.

This certification is the responsibility of the Mechanical Code Enforcement Branch in the Indiana Department of Homeland Security’s Division of Fire and Building Safety. As of April 26, 2006, only one company, Snyder Farms, has obtained the necessary certification and is legal to operate in Indiana.

With the prom season here, schools that may wish to include a mechanical bull as part of an after-prom party are being urged to make sure the company providing the bull has obtained the necessary certification and approval. Failure to do so could create a liability risk. The same warning also applies to organizers of upcoming fairs and carnivals in Indiana that may also feature mechanical bulls.

1. Department of Homeland Frackin' Security?
I thought they were going to tell us Al Qaeda members were smuggling themselves into the country inside mechanical bulls.

But no, that would make too much sense.

Could the corruption of our voting system be given as much attention by Homeland Security as the after-prom mechanical bull certification!

7. I think they're TRYING to make every federal agency look like a joke
so they can get support for tearing down the New Deal programs.

They've already shrunk the treasury enough to rationalize 'drowning it in a bathtub'... next step, public confidence.

11. I think so to -
A few years down the road they'll have all the proof they need to show that the government is ineffective, which can then be used as an argument to privatize all of it.

12. I hope the good people of Indiana have stocked up on their

13. Follow the money
DHS is putting out a memo letting people know that Snyder Farms is the only company allowed to rent mechanical bulls in the entire state, thanks to a new law.

Money changed hands somewhere to make that happen. Who sponsored that law, and who runs Snyder Farms?

14. Uh, this is the INDIANA Dept. of Homeland Insecurity...
Used to be called the Indiana State Emergency Managment Agency until "911 Fever" took hold of the more brainless of bureaucrats.

Mechanical Bulls? I thought those things went out with "50-cent Texas Pride Night" and Mickey Gillie?

16. You've got to be kidding me.
This is what Homeland Security has to worry about? I'll make them a deal. After they've rounded up all the terrorists, illegal aliens, axe murderers, rapists, and drug dealers, I'll be willing to listen to a lecture about the dangers of mechanical bulls.
