Incredibly effective, incisive performance by Colbert. Three observations:

1. In the era of absolute monarchies, only one person could attack the king — the court jester.

2. The Book of Esther is the only part of the Bible written with ironic satire. Perhaps because after a failed monarchy and a decadent exile, the Rabbis figured that this was the most effective approach.

3. As for the mainstream press response — “I don’t know how to easily describe ‘a sense of humor,’ but I do know that I am very uncomfortable around someone who doesn’t have one.” (R. Aaron Lichtenstein)

Stephen keeps good company.

2. The role of the FOOL. Perhaps that is what we share here at DU.
The Fool can't help but tell what he knows and sees.
He lacks internal censoring mechanisms.
The wise monarch keeps one around.
Bush has none.
