Colbert chatter just won't stop
Will he go five for five? It's day four of the workweek and Stephen Colbert remains atop Technorati's most-popular searches, the spot he's occupied all week. Everybody's still all abuzz over his performance at Saturday's White House Correspondents Association dinner, where he sarcastically skewered President Bush. (Check out our post Wednesday for more on all this.)

Helping to keep the debate alive: This morning, Washington Post columnist Richard Cohen weighed in - and he wasn't on Colbert's side.

"He failed dismally in the funny person's most solemn obligation:

to use absurdity or contrast or hyperbole to elucidate," Cohen wrote. "He was, like much of the blogosphere itself, telling like-minded people what they already know and alienating all the others. In this sense, he was a man for our times. He also wasn't funny."

Black guys are all like this... "oooo...oooo"
White guys are all like this... "eeerrr...eeerrr"
????

I am getting really tired of all the racial jokes on tv recently. Not that they are "wrong" but because they are just plain lazy jokes. Anyone can repeat a stereotype over and over again. FUNNY!!! :eyes:

19. Oh c'mon, that's total bullshit - "one of the greatest speeches"
If you believe that, you haven't listened to or read the really great ones. Let's see:

John Kennedy, "Ask not what your country can do for you ..."

Martin Luther King, Jr., "I have a dream" (or just about ANY of MLK's speeches!),

Robert Kennedy, "Martin Luther King was shot and killed tonight ..."

Abraham Lincoln, "With malice toward none, with charity for all ..."

Abraham Lincoln, "Four score and seven years ago ..."

(And I could go on. And on. And on.)

While I respect what Colbert did, his routine does not BEGIN to compare with the truly GREAT speeches of American history. Maybe we need to back down the hyperbole just a tad ...

42. Ah the good old days
I've listened to or read those speeches.

Not Impressed.

I mean, who cares what a bunch of old dead liberals had to say anyway.

Everybody knows that progress in history has a strong liberal bias.

But seriously, I think its dangerous to romanticize the past too much. Those people were speaking the truth in a way that was daring and moving for their time. Colbert spoke the truth in a way that is daring and moving for our time.

Lofty ideas like the ones in those speeches are snickered at these days, or have been so cheapened by punditry and hypocritical right wingers repeating the sound bites stolen from the poetry of the past. Today, it may be viewed as crass to some, but Irony and Sarcasm is what can move us, perhaps it's jaded, but as we all know, satire has its own rich historical pedigree as well.

9. Sent this letter to Cohen last night...
Most of the time I don't find Colbert particularly funny. His pretend Republican shtick doesn't work for me. Usually. But standing in front of Bush himself and delivering the same message? Well, that's a different story.

Sorry, Mr. Cohen. It was damn funny. Uncomfortable at times, especially for those in the audience who didn't want to draw attention to themselves, but still funny. Scalia laughed loudly enough while Colbert openly mocked him. Takes a certain kind of guy to do that.

Guess Bush isn't that kind of guy. Now there's a surprise.

You don't get the joke? The joke is that this man and his administration insulate themselves from criticism at every opportunity. The press is walking on eggshells as if afraid they'll be dragged into a dark room and beaten with a stick for pointing out not only their foibles, but their outright deceptions.

As long as one American soldier, or one Iraqi child, is held captive to his imperial ambitions, Mr. Bush should be forced to suffer the indignity of public mockery on a regular basis. In person.

It's only fair.

Don't get it? Too bad for you. We certainly do.

60. Actually, YOU missed my point
So let me spell it out. Colbert is the current "hero" of DUers, many of whom will tolerate NO deviation from the accepted wisdom. I was not knocking MSJ, I was actually agreeing with her post. And in so doing, I was taking a jab at the "accepted wisdom" at DU, viz., that Colbert is (a) a hero, (b) an orator the likes of which we've not seen in American history, (c) the bravest human on the face of the planet, and (d) whatever other hyperbole someone can concoct wile on a caffeine buzz at 3 A.M. in front of the warm glow of the monitor.

I appreciate what SC did at the WHCD. And it did take some guts, given that it *could* still end up being a career-killer, although I doubt it. Frankly, there's a BANDWAGON of *-critics these days (and thank God for that!). I have more respect for the Dixie Chicks, who basically DID put their careers on the line. But it's not like they were going to be KILLED over it ...

... unlike Martin, Bobby, and others who were KILLED, literally KILLED, for their politics.

What I'm saying is this: if we've fallen so far as a democratic society that the BEST WE CAN DO is a comedian making fun of the administration at a correspondents' dinner, then America is OVER.

Brrring. Brrring.

John Stewart here.

Good one, John. Very funny.

Stephen? Hi.

I got it, John. And my entire staff is rolling around laughing themselves into incontinence.

Stephen??

I won’t get anything coherent out of them for the rest of the day.

Stephen, what are you talking about?

You know. This invitation to host the White House Press Corps Dinner. Listen, Stewart, just because you got the Oscars is no..

Stephen - I didn’t send it, I swear. (slow double take) You got an invitation to host the WHAT?!?

It had to come from over there, John.

I’ll check with my staff, but they wouldn’t – hold on. (Minute of hold music)

Thanks a lot, Stephen. Now MY entire staff are running around high-fiving and hugging each other. They didn’t send it, though.

You sure?

I’m sure. Stephen, could it possibly – nah, never mind. Too weird. Stephen, did you really say “laughing themselves into incontinence?” Can I use that?

Later, John. I’m going to get to the bottom of this!

And the rest - is history.

The one who never gets the joke the first time? The one who, hours or even days later will bring up something someone else said, and tell you what they should have said?

I'm not talking about the regret we all feel when we miss a chance for a zinger. I'm talking about the guy who actually talks about it afterward. Often more than once. His favorite phrases are "I shoulda said" and "I just thought of this for when that guy called me slow-witted, wanna hear it?"

Bet you never knew these guys pulled down six-figure paychecks for their ability to string words together.

24. A comment from a use to be Right Winger

I used to consider myself a Republican until Bush and his administration took over and started picking apart our constitution, dividing our country and invaded Iraq. I speak for myself and many others when I say that we have felt helpless and powerless as we've watched the arrogance and corrutption grow more brazen by the day while the main stream media is asleep at the wheel or driven by the corporate greed that panders to the lowest common denominator. Watching Colbert address the high powered audience the way he did made me almost giddy that some one finally had the stones to tell the truth that needs to be told. The cold reception and lack of media coverage has proven the accuracy of his message. I can't get over the republican response and how people still don't get it. What will it take for you to see what's going on with our government???? This blog is obviously tilted way to the right and it's unbeleivable to me that anyone still support this president.

audience, just because his review is not praise does not mean those that watch it because of his article will not end up loving it...

51. This one was hilarious...
I don't know who Robbie Cooper is other than a guy who, according to his own web site, claims to have a BS in prof. writing, yet appears to believe "dispresectful" is a word. I certainly don't know why you chose to quote him.

But more importantly, Mr. Cooper misses a third option when he states, "I would have asked him (Colbert)to step outside or shut his pie-hole. He would not have had a third option."

When confronted by such a person who apparently does not have the intellect to debate differing views and claims that he would rather physically silence you, one always has the option of obliging such a rube and shutting his pie hole first.

In Cooper's case, this would be a particularly harsh remedy. Judging from the picture on his blog, it appears that Cooper has yet to meet a pie that he didn't like.

he was naked to his face, we cannot let this be yesterday's news.

62. Just saw this on buzzflash..
"Editorial: Presidential shtick / What did they think a TV satirist would do?"
Friday, May 05, 2006

Snips~
"Washington insiders have accused Mr. Colbert of violating an unspoken rule that the press go easy on the president one night a year. Coverage of Mr. Bush's self-deprecating skit with a look-a-like entered the 24-hour news cycle with little or no mention of Mr. Colbert's scathing monologue.

This isn't surprising. Mr. Colbert indicted the D.C. media establishment for mindless complacency, as well. To mention Mr. Colbert's criticism of the president would also have meant examining his charge of media bungling. Mr. Colbert received a chilly reception in the hall. Hacks and politicians were scandalized by his honesty and "bad manners."

What did they expect Mr. Colbert to do? It was like hiring George Carlin for his street cred, but hoping he'd turn out to be more like Yakov Smirnoff. It makes no sense. In the end, Stephen Colbert did his shtick while media royalty and Mr. Bush did theirs."

Interesting take from the Pittsburg Post-Gazette..
