Condemned man: Injection 'not working'

Chicago Sun-Times, United States

<snip>The execution was set to begin at 10: a.m., but was delayed as the team worked to find a vein in his right arm. Clark said ''they're not working'' as the team tried to start the injection.

After 25 minutes of trying to find a vein, a curtain was pulled over the window separating witnesses from the area where the execution was to take place. Clark was heard moaning and groaning and when the curtain was reopened he had a shunt in one arm.

1. Disgusting!
I'll ad that to my ever-growing list of reasons there should be no death penalty!

Still barbarians after all these years.

3. I'll second that
It's a disgrace, which should be apparent by its bedfellows abroad.

2. Shunt? Not likely, that's surgery, done under general anesthesia
They may have put in a long line, one that extends from the antecubital fossa (where your elbow bends) and up into the vena cava (the main vein that supplies the heart) at the entrance to the right atrium. Those are usually placed under local anesthesia, at most.

In any case, I'm always surprised how much getting an IV started hurts, always seem to forget it between times, so I'm not surprised at the moaning. Once it's in, it's largely painless (unless you bang it into something).

IV drug abusers and people with a lot of sun damage are miserable to start IVs on.

In any case, it's still state sponsored murder, IMO, and I speak as a survivor. The DP is barbaric and if it is ever used, should be reserved for dangerous scum like Ted Bundy who escaped from jail TWICE and continued killing. That is the ONLY real DP case I have ever seen, the only case it could possibly be justified.
