Latino/Hispanic Group Mission Statement

The Latino/Hispanic Group is intended as a place of informed discussion for issues relating to the Hispanic/Latino community within the U.S., in other countries, or regarding foreign relations between the U.S. and other countries where such a community may reside. Through discussion, we hope to educate and be educated not only on political issues, but also on the rich cultural history of Latinos. Finally, this group is to be a celebration of Hispanic culture and heritage.

All Latinos, Hispanics, or interested parties are welcome to participate for the purpose of discussion of issues, networking, organizing, or support. This group is intended as a safe forum for the informed discussion, but varying viewpoints are welcome too!

Ok, this is the rough draft,laheina made a great proposal in the original thread, so I used that as the opening sentence and the final paragraph. Thanks laheina!

I'd like to see this group grow legs!

The only thing I'd add to the OP mission statement is the phrase "respectfully presented", as in

This group is intended as a safe forum for the informed discussion, but varying viewpoints respectfully presented are welcome too!

Hopefully that will keep a civil level of discourse, which is sometimes (sadly) lacking on DU.

I never realized how ignorant DU was about Hispanic culture until this immigration issue arose. Hispanics are a huge and growing force for the democratic party, if the democrats seize the opportunity. But if DU is any indicator, the dems will shoot themselves in the ass like they always do to try to gain republican votes.

They don't realize that most of those protesters are not all illegal. In fact, judging from my experience in NY this past weekend, most are young American citizens -- the offspring of immigrants -- who have taken this matter very personally. Just like I have.

They are tomorrow's voters.

attempting to explain what really is happening, the truth about immigrants, and those posters have been shot down by those who don't want to believe anything except the RW talking points they got from Karl Rove.
