The Cool Factor.
I hate to seem superficial, but can anyone truly doubt that one of the best things about being a Democrat (besides our superior political philosophy) is that we're the kind of people you want to associate yourself with? Call it the "cool factor"...we're generally pretty cool people.

Seriously, think about it in terms of the tired "guy I'd have a beer with" analogy...prominent Republicans are just so damn uncool. They are like the kid in school who wore a suit every day and got beat up during recess. We're the fun ones at the party.

I fondly remember the 1992 campaign, that scene where Clinton put on the shades and played the sax on Arsenio. I remember thinking how incredibly cool that was. How for the first time in my life I was looking at a politician who vaguely resembled a real human being. JFK was before my time, but I think the same attitude surrounded him as well.

Have we lost our cool edge? Beyond the issues, isn't there a kind of aura we should have? Cool confidence in what are leaders do and the ability to dismiss the psychotic Right's rantings for what they are?

I don't know. In this era of American Idol, it seems like we could practically win on coolness alone. And yes, I meant this to be a serious topic of discussion.

1. While I agree with you
I think that substance is far more important than aura. In the mean time I lift my glass to you.

3. It just occurred to me that
this post, while I think it is interesting, is going to be misunderstood and end up on some freeper site.

Oh well. They aren't cool anyway.

4. I definitely think that substance is more important than aura.
But a good combination of the two is pretty unstoppable politically.

2. Gosh I have never
been one of the cool kids. I was always a freak, an artsy art student.

So now I'm cool? Cool.
