I never thought it would happen, but
Freepers have invaded my school. Okay, story time.

So, for history homework, we had to write about which president we were most impressed/least impressed with (I did Clinton and Dubya) and we shared them in class. And I couldnt belive some of the shit that was coming out of some people's mouths. Here's a sampling:

"FDR didn't DO anything!!! All he did was set up welfare which SUCKSSSSSSSS!!"

"OMG. All the time we learn about how GRRREEAAT FDR was but like really he wasnt...you know?"

"I hate democrats soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

"BILL CLINTON IS THE DEVIL BECAUSE HE CHEATED ON HIS WIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!"

You get the picture. I really never thought it would happen. I go to (probably) the most liberal school in Mississippi. Bleh. I'm angryyy. :grr:

1. Was there not some kind of teacher in this class?
You know, someone who could explain that FDR didn't actually suck and that he had his good points?

I hope the teacher uses this as an opportunity to teach some actual history and what does and does not make a president a failure.

Sound like too much Fox News and not enough actual reading.

2. Well...she was like
Edited on Thu May-04-06 10:24 PM by tinfoil tiaras
"I just want to give you 'both sides of the story'..." (quotes mine, not her's). and on the same day, she told us about some study that said that Republicans gave more money away then Democrats. They (republicans) probably gave it to the "Kill the Gays" charity anyway.

She's ok. She just like lets everyone share their opinion, and of course all the republicans in my class think theyre "oppressed" (uh, hello, youre in Mississippi, the redneck capital of the world!) because theres this one really liberal outspoken girl (shes my friend). She (the teacher) isnt explicity "OMG I LYK LUVVVVV GEE DUBBZZ!!! HE IZ SO AWESUM". I don't know what she is..and i think thats a good thing. Because I hate it when teachers get political.

Yeah,i agree. she didnt really get into what all good FDR did, but she did get into how good LBJ's Great Society was..which i guess was a payoff...i dont know? But when we get to Reagan (AKA the Republican God)...I'm gonna have to bring a bucket to school.

Oh and also, when i said i put Bush as the president I was least impressed with, she was like "Well, you cant judge a president until his term is over." I wanted to say, "Well, in 2006, when the democrats take back congress, his sorry ass will be impeached by at least 2007. Therefore, ending his presidency in humiliation."

3. Opinions are one thing - facts are another thing
Oh well.

Keep fighting for the truth! If you hear lies, get THEM to try and prove their lies.

And know your stuff, too. This is an excellent place to learn, right here. There are lots of smart and passionate people here.

Oh, and welcome to DU!

4. Thanks! I really like DU.
and I'm slowly not feeling like a total newbie here anymore, since I started posting here more often.Everyone on here seems really cool and I want to meet more Democrats from all over the country! :-D

For homework tomorrow, its post on a discussion board about your opinion on Vietnam;"back your position up with facts" it says but I bet you a dollar (haha) that some Freeper will lurk on there and be like "VIETNAM WAS ALL CLINTON'S FAULT!!!!!!!". Oh, just isnt everything Clinton's fault? :sarcasm:

And I bet im going to get like a 5/10 or whatever on my paragraphs, even though they were like really well written. When I get it back, I'll post em on here.

I should use this statistic below for a rich/poor argument. Most Freepers in my private (I say private because there's lots of rich kids...well like its 7/10 rich kids...) school think its the people's fault that they're poor.

51% of welfare recipients are WHITE (there goes the poor, black "welfare queen" stereotype that they've relied on for like ever).

I really am surrounded by WAY too many Freepers. :( :(

12. Vietnam Paragraph
OK yall..so Vietnam. I didn't ever really understand the reason we went in there (sounds like a war were in now *cough* Iraq..sorry guys), but I'll try to tell yall what I think.

Vietnam was a French colony until Japan overthrew it in 1945. The Japanese set up a sort of a puppet country then. Then after WWII is over, the Japanese let Ho Chi Minh rule Vietnam or whatev. THen just like alot of fighting started to happen and I guess Lyndon Johnson or Nixon was like "We have to go into Vietnam and free the people". Then the war went on for a long time and alot of people died and the US lost (yes, the US lost the war).

one thing I don't get about Americans as a people is this whole "We're right your wrong" philosophy. OK, I'm gonna get majorly flamed for this but, the communists really werent (exept for that whole missle thing) doing anything to US (Communists never attacked American Soil ala September 11, Pearl Harbor, etc). Sure they were opressing their own people but really, it isnt our place to just go in everywhere and be like "STOP! WE ARE AMERICA AND WE SAY YOU HAVE TO!" Oppressing people is bad and all (I'm not saying that it isnt) but we are not the world's policeman (or woman...I'm being PC here ...). America can't stop all the hurt in the world and it's better to do things diplomatically and only if nessisary, with force. OKay, I was off topic...getting back on...

About the soldiers coming home and stuff...I just have to say, you can support the soldiers without supporting the war or the president. The statement sure rings true today. The people that spit and boo the soldiers just make all anti-war people look horrible and give the other side more ammunition to fight them with.

Don't get mad at me but Vietnam (kinda) reminds me of Iraq right now. The main mission objective of Vietnam (and Iraq) was to "free the people from oppression". As i said up there, the whole "freeing people" is a bunch of bullhonkey (haha is that an OK word to say..i hope so). I don't think the American public knew what we were fighting for in Vietnam and in Iraq today (at least most everyone I knew/know). Also, Vietnam was a guerilla war (like Iraq) and the Americans didn't know who was their friend and who was their enemy.

So, in conclusion, Vietnam was NOT a good war to get into for a number of reasons, including that of not well-known guerilla warfare and all the vagueness surrouding the reason to go to war.

Sorry its all jumbley and all..but i hope yall can read it. :)

6. Surrounded, huh?
You know, I migrated to Minnesota in '93, but it's not that much better here. I've been thinking of moving back south because there's more solidarity when you're a minority.

You hang in theah dahlin'.

16. Beware of people who want to give "both sides" of a story
that usually means that they won't refute Republican BS, even if its an obvious lie, and they will give any RW inflammatory statement "liberals love gays almost as much as they hate Jesus" just as much credit and merit as a factual statement from the left "9/11 happened on Bush's watch, end of story"

20. LOL.
The "liberals love gays as much as they hate jesus" statement accurately repersents the majority of the population in the state of Mississippi. Those people probably celeberate Confederate Memorial Day too.

I can see it now..."Both sides of the story: Bill Clinton; test question: Who cheated on his wife while he was president and wuz lyk tha wurrrrrrrrsssst prezident lyk evr?!?!?!?!?!?!?!"

:puke:

Oh, update. One of the questions on the quiz I took on friday was "Which president is famous for being very indecisive and vague?". The "correct" answer: FDR. WTF. I was so tempted to put George W Bush....

11. Oh yes.
About WWII...she was like "FDR was so planning to get into WWII before Pearl Harbor" or something along those lines, it wasnt good, though. Now because of this, everyone in my class thinks that FDR is like the most overrated president. Whatev. They're probably watching Fox News at home, so theres nothing really that I can do for them.

Oh and another thing, I nearly upchucked my dinner when my Freeper dad was like "If McGovern won in 1972, we would all be speaking Russian!! Cause he's a commie!! HUR HUR HUR" Well, he didnt say the commie part and the "hur hur hur" (I added those for effect, sometimes I like to embellish the truth like the big W in the white house (no acutally, he embellishes lies, same difference)...). That's just like saying "if the democrats win, in 50 years we will all be speaking arabic." First of all, arabic isnt the only language spoken in the Middle East. Second of all, that's a very eronious statement to make because you cant predict the future...

Okay, I'm gonna stop. I'm getting really off topic....:D

18. I think it must be a school policy
Edited on Tue May-09-06 09:24 PM by tinfoil tiaras
for teachers not to tell their political leanings. Because many of my teachers have come very close to it but then suddenly back down. I guess they don't want to "alienate" anyone.

I remember last year when I wore a Kerry button to school, I got in trouble. "The school doesn't endorse any candidate or political leaning" was their explanation. Bullcrap.

The link to the discussion forums doesnt work but the majority of the people on there were like "Vietnam wuz lyk gud 4 wun ting....lyk killin communism u no?!?!?! cuz communists r lyk terrorists 2day...lol"
