Much more laughter on Democracy Now's play of Colbert's WHCD speech
I must say I was surprised, although I'd found his performance hilarious anyhow.

But listening to the podcast of Amy Goodman's Democracy Now from yesterday, she played his whole speech, excluding his "audition tape" for Press Secretary.

There were even outburts of applause to some of his best lines.

Anyone heard or seen the podcast, on tv or streamed it from Democracy Now dot com?

1. Reread the transcript and this is scathing--I missed it

"Look, folks, my point is that I don't believe this is a low point in this presidency. I believe it is just a lull before a comeback. I mean, it's like the movie Rocky. Alright? The President, in this case, is Rocky Balboa, and Apollo Creed is everything else in the world. It's the tenth round. He's bloodied. His corner man, Mick, who in this case, I guess, would be the Vice President, he's yelling, "Cut me, Dick, cut me!" And every time he falls, everyone says, "Stay down, Rocky! Stay down!" But does he stay down? No. Like Rocky, he gets back up, and in the end he -- actually loses in the first movie. Okay, doesn't matter. Doesn’t matter."

That flew over my head the first few times but now I see that as a snipe at Bush's having lost the presidency the first time. If he didn't mean it that way--it still works for me.

3. I hadn't thought of that either. Not having seen the Rocky
films this was one that kinda went right by me too.

7. That's is part of the genius of the performance--the multiple layers
Even what appeared to be slip ups were staged to make a point.

I think that's why the MSM is beginning to be so vicious about Colbert's performance: Just what a masterpiece this is is beginning to dawn in their dim minds.

For students of rhetoric or style and stylistics, this would make a great subject of a paper. It is very rich and has such depth.

17. I saw that joke as a way to
bring up both Gore and Kerry. They fought the machine and kept getting punched in the face ... and still "lost" in the end. Gore and Kerry ARE Rocky in that joke.

4. no, but on ABC's audio...
...the laughter remains steady and strong throughout.

It's beginning to appear that c-span's audio just didn't pick up the sound of the laughter, making it possible for all those pundits to claim "not funny!"

5. Okay. It must be that then. The mic must have been very
adjusted to mostly only Colbert on CSPAN.

Cause exactly as you say the laughter, and even applause, is apparent throughout the piece.

8. It's the mike trick. How they cut out all the other sound to get
the "Dean Scream!" Those techies are in the pay of nasty people.

9. Yes I heard it on DN
and they must have used Howard's mile on the other recording. There was laughter throughout, and some clapping- particularly after the glacier comment.

15. Do you have a link to that? NPR's "On The Media" took
the ball and ran with the idea that Colbert got a very cold reception.

10. i watched on cspan and heard almost no laughing. later watched a
clip and i heard laughing thru out most of it and didnt sound as restraint as media claims or as i saw the first time. there was a vast difference in the two watchings. i absolutely noticed the difference. i didnt know if cspan had the audiences volume low or something to where we couldnt hear. but i couldnt hear anything suspicious on the second tape, like they pumped in the laughing. sounded natural and correct. just a day after dinner

11. I would not tend to doubt either Democracy Now or CSPAN.
I don't think either would alter the videotapes.

Since CSPAN broadcast it live, I think, they'd have no reason (like external pressure) to turn down the volume on the audience reaction other than to make Colbert's speech clearer.

I believe the DN tape reveals the accurate picture of the event. Anyone who was present should have been able to hear the laughter.

Even on the CSPAN version you could see Joe Wilson for one laughing and loving Colbert's routine. As well as others I didn't recognize.

And there was some laughter to be heard on CSPAN, but not nearly as much as on DN's audio.

12. Raw story has the ABC link
showing W during Colbert's Press Secretary Video and he does smile and laugh more than we have been told. Of course he also grimaces more than a few times.

laughing inside at some points, but trying to hold it back, too.

14. I think they probably do lower the volume on the "other" mics
Edited on Fri May-05-06 05:00 PM by SoCalDem
How embarrassing it would be to pick up "stray comments"..and as a courtesy to the speaker, it would be ordinary too.. In a live broadcast, if the volumes were the same, you might miss what the speaker were saying if the audience "sounds" were overlapping ..

I always turn my volume all the way up before the press conferences start...and immediately after..just to catch some stray comments.. I once heard "Utter bullshit" voiced after a particularly raucous Snotty Scottie Show ..

18. The differences between the ABC and the C-SPAN versions
show that C-SPAN was tapped in directly to the feed on the events boards, thus they had a clear picture of the video rather than a picture of the camera picking up the picture on a monitor in the room. ABC obviously wasn't tied to that feed because they had nothing to show the video portion unless they went to the picture on a monitor ... so they trained their camera's on blivet** instead.

It's also telling that Colbert had attended previously as a guest of ABC, and Wilson and Plame were also guests of ABC. ABC was working the room where C-SPAN was working the event. Putting both of them together and you get a clear picture of what was really happening in that room.

I don't remember where I saw it, but there are times noted (somewhere on the web) of when events occurred during the evening. If you synch up the ABC footage and use it for the audio, and watch the C-SPAN version for visual content, you can get a really clear picture of what really took place as far as laughter and reaction are concerned.
