RI Senate Poll: Chafee may lose GOP Primary
Edited on Fri May-05-06 09:46 AM by WI_DEM
A new poll indicates that Lincoln Chafee may lose the GOP primary in Rhode Island. Right now the Senator leads his opponent Steve Laffey by 48-39 percent. Among Republican voters Chafee's lead is only 4-points 46-42 with 12% Undecided. If Chafee loses, the Democrats have a great shot of winning this seat since Laffey is a conservative Republican.

p.s.
and Rasmussen says that if Laffey is the GOP nominee that "likely" Dem Senate nominee Sheldon Whitehouse would beat him 51-32 percent and that against Chafee it is a statistical deadheat with Chafee at 44% and Whitehouse at 41%.

1. I think the 'Lican leaders have finally realized . . .
That all their political woes stem from the fact that their party has drifted to the left recently, and the only way to reestablish their bonafides is to lurch further to the right and nominate a nothing but archconservatives in this primary season.

Progressives should gratefully support this strategy.

2. He's no John Chafee. He read Sports Illust. during city council meetings
He's just not that interested in being in government.

4. Have they completely written off Carl Sheeler?

He's the other democratic contender for this seat.

5. I think the major contenders are Whitehouse and Matt Brown
who I think is the Sec of State in the Dem Primary. I know Carl Sheeler has posted a bit on DU, but I think the political pundits don't give him much chance, but then you never know.

7. Matt Brown dropped out of the race a couple of weeks ago.
Carl has been getting some coverage in the Providence paper, but the poles have not included him yet. Maybe with Brown out, they will include him.

Gotta like Carl's "Impeach Bush" campaign slogan!

8. That is great news.
Time to give ol' Linc the boot, set up a wingnut to run against the Democrat, and then watch that seat go blue.

11. Thank God Patrick Kennedy decided not to run for this senate seat!
Guilty or innocent, it would have been a nightmare to lose a senate seat and possible regaining control due to a Kennedy scandal. Its bad enough that its drowning out all other news today, had he been the nominee, we'd be sunk.
