Reid Statement on The Resignation Of Porter Goss
Reid Statement on The Resignation Of Porter Goss

5/5/2006 5:58:00 PM

To: National Desk, Political Reporter

Contact: Jim Manley or Rebecca Kirszner, 202-224-2939, both of office of Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid

WASHINGTON, May 5 /U.S. Newswire/ -- With the abrupt resignation of CIA Director Porter Goss, Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid released the following statement:

"Events in Iraq and elsewhere demonstrate that unbiased and accurate intelligence is critical to our national security. That's why it is essential that the President's next nominee for CIA Director be a non-partisan individual with strong national security and intelligence credentials. The men and women of the CIA are part of our front lines in the war on terror. They deserve a professional and dedicated Director who will ensure that America's intelligence is free from political pressure and who restores the CIA to the premier intelligence agency that it once had been."

4. I'll add this here
I started a thread on this, but it's sinking like a stone.

There are two immediate thoughts here. First, there is no way Harry Reid will allow Bush to get a nomination through for a replacement between now and November, without making the Administration walk through fire on intelligence reform, the Roberts' Phase Two inquiry, the Plame case, and John Negroponte's pathetic performance as the Director of National Intelligence. In fact, Reid may simply take the position that "we'll wait to see who controls these committees" after November.

6. Goss's replacement has to be approved by Congress, right?
Is Harry firing the first shot across bush's bow by saying pick a NON-PARTISAN, experienced replacement or it will be a no-go?

14. thanks, rodeodance, for your response
I am not always clear which bush choices can bypass Congress and which ones have to go before Congress for advice and consent.

10. That's a good statement
I'm sure His Imperial Incompetency will be saying that those are the qualifications that are possessed by his next DCI designate, Karl Rove.

11. The word NEXT is the clue!
I love this line, the word "NEXT" should be underline because to me it says that Mr. GOSS was NOT --non partisan etc. etc.)

"That's why it is essential that the President's NEXT :) nominee for CIA Director be a non-partisan individual with strong national security and intelligence credentials."

That was my take on it.
