The latest from the World Can't Wait campaign.
> > >
Dear World Can't Wait Supporter,
The movement to Drive Out the Bush Regime is spreading and you can HELP NOW! Make sure it spreads throughout the summer by becoming a SUSTAINER of World Can't Wait Donate now. To give you a beginning sense of the potential effect we can have (and to put a smile on your face), check this out:
Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld's speech at the Southern Center for International Studies in Atlanta Thursday was disrupted by World Can't Wait activists, making international news. At the beginning of the speech a woman stood up holding a banner reading "Guilty of War Crimes!", and shouted "I cannot stay silent, this man needs to be in prison for war crimes. Drive OUT the Bush Regime!" as she was dragged away by security. Two more protesters also stood up and accused Rumsfeld of war crimes and lying, and another man made a silent protest. During the Q&A, Ray McGovern (a former CIA analyst who testified before the Bush Crimes Commission) quoted Rumsfeld’s own words to show how he lied to justify war on Iraq, leaving the Defense Secretary sputtering a denial. The extraordinary event was one of the most substantial direct challenges to the regime, so much so that CNN later posted McGovern's and Rumsfeld's words, proving that McGovern was correct. Ray McGovern this morning on Democracy Now.
Thanks to everyone who donated this week in response to our last email. This puts us in a beginning position to implement our audacious plans for a summer in which everyone begins to know there is a growing movement that will not stop until the Bush regime is driven out. More is needed! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Many of you have been asking us, “Why aren’t the students more active? Given what the Bush regime is doing, why don’t the campuses look like they did in the 1960’s?” To that end, World Can’t Wait aims to bring its student organizing to a whole new level this summer, and really turn the campuses out for the major mobilization called for October 5.
We are beginning this summer with an intensive student training project June 2-11, to train a core of student organizers who can spread this movement all summer long and hit the campuses ready to lead a powerful student movement in the fall. Click here for more details, to sign up to attend, or to help spread the word before school gets out.
Other plans for reaching and mobilizing millions of youth this summer include sending organizers to New Orleans to join with other student volunteers in rebuilding the city while spreading the word about October 5, and tabling every stop on this summer’s Warped Tour (which means reaching hundreds of thousands of angry youth).
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Funds are urgently needed to make any of this possible. Already, one generous supporter has donated a van to enable youth organizers to table at every date on the Warped Tour, but to be perfectly honest, right now we don’t have any money to make t-shirts, buttons, and flyers (or to put gas in the van). If you want to see a student movement to drive out the Bush regime, help make it happen. Donate now.

SUPPORT NEEDED: After a 5-day trial, Carol Fisher was found guilty of 2 counts of assault on police officers for posting a sign announcing World Can't Wait's protests against Bush's State of the Union address. This is an outrage! Her sentencing will be on June 2. We have a lot of work to do.

Reason of the Day to Drive out the Bush Regime, 5/4/06:
Under the Patriot Act, the FBI has been collecting your bank, internet service provider, and other personal information without court approval. According to its report, last year the FBI sent 9,200 “national security letters” to numerous companies, forcing them to turn over detailed information about over 3,500 US citizens and permanent residents. By the votes of 96 Senators (yes, almost all Democrats included), the now permanent Patriot Act allows the FBI to collect this information without warrants. And while the “compromise” Patriot Act requires the FBI to report on their spying, (1) the notion that this regime can obtain this kind of information on whoever they want is unfathomable, even if they file an annual report, and (2) in Bush’s signing statement to the Patriot Act, he arrogated himself the right not to follow its oversight provisions, like the one that made the FBI file this report.
