Poll question: Was there a double standard in treatment of Kennedy vs. McKinney by police |
|
Capitol Police appear to have responded in one way to Kennedy's accident; and in a different way when McKinney first walked past a security checkpoint on March 29 -- an incident in which the police charge McKinney struck an officer who challenged her.
Beasley said the Capitol Police turned a routine check into an "international incident" in the way they challenged McKinney at the checkpoint -- even before she responded.
According to Beasley, the Capitol Police often give members of Congress some slack; and he said it appears they were protective of Kennedy.
"Cynthia McKinney is a Congressperson, too," said Beasley. "Let's protect all of them. That's what we think -- one standard. If they could do that courtesy to Kennedy, certainly, they could look again at what's going on with Cynthia."http://www.wxia.com/news/news_article.aspx?storyid=79503

2. But the policeman who stopped McKinney DIDN'T KNOW she was a |

Congressperson until she showed him her ID at the end of the encounter.

3. And they should have known. |
|
That is part of the problem, the lax security at the halls of congress.
I am sure the Capitol Hill police didn't know it was Kennedy until he slammed into the barrier and they ran his plates.

4. Maybe they should have, but the fact is they didn't. I don't think it |

shows LAX security, I think it shows tight security — if they stop people they don't recognize. And yes, the police knew it was Kennedy after they ran his plates.

7. We only have the word of the capital police that they couldn't.... |

...recognize McKinney, and IMHO, something smells about that whole story.

are relying on humans and not the technology available. Iris scanning devices are available and very reliable. If those were in place at the entrances to our public offices, then only those who had their irises scanned and recognizable, would gain entrance without having to be recognized by guards. The guards, in theory, are supposed to be able to visually recognize each of the members of congress. McKinney, having had difficulties in the past with recognition and having raised the issue of harassment by the police, has her photo prominently displayed in the offices of the police in an effort to prevent just what occurred. A hair change does not alter the face of the woman. If you say it does you are mistaken.

From what I understand, patrol officers first encountered Kennedy, When Capitol police Sergeants' arrived, it was they who dismissed the patrol officers and then drove him home.
Secondly, it is a requirement for Capitol police to recognize members of congress on sight, and they go through extensive training at federal paramilitary facilities in Georgia and New Mexico, so that they can be proficient in that skillset.

5. I see much more of a double-standard with the way Cheney was.... |
|
...treated as opposed to the teatment of both Kennedy and McKinney.
Cheney was not charged with anything, nor did he have to do anything to make up for shooting a fellow hunter at close range.
McKinney is now involved in a legal process, and Kennedy checked into a rehab center.

The Capitol Police went out of their way to help the white male Congressman from the North, while the same Capitol Police harassed the black female Congresswoman from the South.

15. McKinney is alleged to have hit a cop. |
|
The investigation continues and as part of that investigation is an effort to determine if she "hit" him, poked him, punched him, slapped him, or merely defended herself when grabbed from behind.
Don't profess as fact what you do not know to be fact.
I do agree with you that there is no comparision regarding the two incidents.
