Poll shows conservative revolt against Bush - Chicago Sun Times

BY RON FOURNIER

WASHINGTON -- Angry conservatives are driving the approval ratings of President Bush and the GOP-led Congress to dismal new lows, according to an AP-Ipsos poll that underscores why Republicans fear an Election Day massacre.

Six months out, the intensity of opposition to Bush and Congress has risen sharply, along with the percentage of Americans who think the nation is on the wrong track.

The AP-Ipsos poll also suggests that Democratic voters are far more motivated than Republicans. Elections in the middle of a president's term traditionally favor the party whose core supporters are the most energized.

This week's survey of 1,000 adults, including 865 registered voters, found:

Just 33 percent of the public approves of Bush's job performance, the lowest of his presidency. That compares with 36 percent approval in early April. Forty-five percent of self-described conservatives now disapprove of the president.

1. my favorite quote
''I think he's the dumbest president we've ever had,'' said Mark Rauzi, a conservative voter from Downstate Gillespie. AP

7. As Olsen Johnson once said...
"Now who can argue with that?" (Blazing Saddles)

2. Unfortunately, I don't think we'll see much more of a drop.
Most democrats never approved of him and most of what's left are probably the diehards that would go to their graves before they would vote against him. The stragglers probably don't even know who is president or seldom follow the news.

I'd love to see him hit 11% but I'd be shocked if it goes below 28%.

3. I think it's entirely possible to see him a hair below 20%
because that's where his snarling sidekick, Cheney is. Will we see that? I have no doubt we will if he does something violently stupid against Iran. However, if the worst we're facing if $4.00/gallon gasoline and prohibitively expensive heating oil, I don't expect to see him much below 30% because there are enough stupid people in this country who don't follow politics and are incapable of connecting the dots unless they are being threatened by another world war.

A year ago, I'd have doubted he'd ever go below 35%, just because of the religious lunacy support. Even that is now weakening as it's become clear that he's doing everything he can in opposition to the teachings of Jesus Christ.

The stupid will always be with us, but he has been so over the top that he's losing core support among the corrupt and even the delusional.

4. It is the independent voters who are the key and they have
turned against the bush cabal and the repub Congress in great numbers. In polls that show the numbers not only of the dems and repubs but the independents it is very telling.

6. LOL, it is even more delicious knowing that AOL is more popular
with the right than the left which makes this online poll even more interesting.

8. It's theoretically possible.

Two of the categories counted for "approval" are these:

Lean toward approval:     10%
Still have mixed feelings:   2% (This one is split and given half to approval, half to disapproval)

If those "Lean toward approval" folks get pissed off... :)

9. Here's another question from the same poll with delicious results
Edited on Sat May-06-06 12:58 PM by mcscajun
"And if the election for Congress were held today, would you want to see the Republicans or Democrats win control of Congress?"

And the results for the period 5/1/06 - 5/3/06 are:

Republicans:      34
Democrats:          51
Neither:             13
Not sure:             2

Hold that line!

:woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:
