It's election year and the amendment to stop flag desecration is back.
This amendment is an old Republican standby that they pull out every few years. I guess they think it will make people believe that crazed mobs are running through the streets burning flags by the thousands. They don't really want it to pass, of course. That would take away a standard issue they use to stir up the faithful.

But what if, by some weird chance, it actually passed? What would be next? Would we all have to wear flag lapel pins? Would we have to sing the national anthem and say the pledge before starting work every day? We know these sewer rats couldn't care less about flag amendments, pledges, anthems, and all the rest of the so called patriotic crap they throw at us.

But what's amazing is the number of people who still buy into this garbage as opposed to the war in Iraq, gas prices, a corrupt congress and White House, and the way in which we've all been screwed over the last six years. Such people would probably eat their own children if they were told it was a form of patriotism.

1. This crap has a limit on its audience.
Crap like Flag Burning has a cap on its audience. Which is to say that it only appeals to the majority when the majority can convince itself that it is otherwise comfortable. Sure, there will always be a brainwashed portion of the devestatingly poor that get jingohyped to crusade for these events. But I don't think this stuff is going to play this time around. In order for it to work, the public needs to be at least "on the fence" concerning the political issues of the day. With Bush polling at a 1/3 approval rating, this sort of kneejerk politics will hopefully be dismissed for what it is.

2. It's a very tired horse they're trotting out to flog.
It'll play well among the braindead who usually back it. But, it's hardly on the minds of most people.

The appalling thing is the "progressive" politicians who will tremble and back it.

3. A flag isn't holy or sacred. Desecrate means:
To violate the sacredness of; profane. From dictionary.com. That's one thing to call the Repukes on - a flag isn't sacred.
