Wal-Mart stores are high crime areas - cops upset

http://www.walmartcrimereport.com/crimereport.html

-snip-

For years, public reports have chronicled the terrible problem of crimes at Wal-Mart stores. Horrific reports of rape, murder, kidnappings, robbery and assault at Wal-Mart stores. For many police officials, the issue of crimes at Wal-Mart stores has been “overwhelming:”

In South Strabane, PA: Police Chief Don Zofchak met with Wal-Mart officials in 2004 trying to reduce their calls to the police. "Frankly, it was unbearable…. I've got 26 square miles and God knows how many other businesses to deal with. Their requests or demands for service, proportionally, were overwhelming."

-snip-

Now, a new study of official police reports proves how serious the issue crime of crime at Wal-Mart stores still is for many towns and cities across America. The shocking new report, titled “Is Your Wal-Mart Safe?” is first national study to analyze official police reports of incidents at 551 Wal-Mart stores, as well as compare rates of criminal/police incidents at Wal-Mart and Target stores.

Among the findings of the “Is Your Wal-Mart Safe” study are:

* Wal-Mart stores analyzed do experience a high rate of criminal/police incidents;
* Based on a sample of “high incident” Wal-Mart stores, Wal-Mart stores experience a much higher rate of reported criminal/police incidents than nearby Target stores;
* National estimates indicate that almost 1 million criminal/police incidents occurred at Wal-Mart stores in 2004 – or 2 criminal/police incidents per minute in 2004;
* Wal-Mart could implement roving security patrols at all stores nation-wide at an estimated cost of 4 cents a customer visit.

I didn't know this (but then I've never been in a Wal-Mart)

1. my husband and I do go to (1)of the Wal-Mart Stores in the area.
We find it to be a sea of many colors and hues, from the people who work there,to the people who shop there...from hindus, to latinos, to orientals, to white folks, to blacks ... wal-mart is really a small universe in itself where people from all over the world are represented there.

we have never seen, or encountered any crimes there, nor have we read about any crimes committed at any of our local wal-mart stores.

although i have not read the link to the report that you have provided, i am beginning to wonder if the report is somehow being prejudiced by all this anti-immigrant sentimet in the united states right now, (a sentiment which hypocritically, in my mind, anyhow, is capable of taking MEXICO'S DAY OF INDEPENDENCE and making it a celebratory day here in these United States. We hate Mexicans, but we love their feast, along with the tacos, the margaritas, the zarapes, the sombreros, the mariaches, etc., etc., etc. what gives?)

In terms of the products available at wal-mart we find many international foods we cannot find in our local supermarkets, at a reduced price (something which might get into the low wages, no health insurance that the wal-mart workers get paid) and from everyone who works at that 24 hour store, we always get a smile whenever we are there.

12. mexican independence day is september 16
Edited on Sat May-06-06 07:12 PM by pitohui
the cinco de drinko holiday you just celebrated is a fake holiday invented by the corona brewing co.

got as much to do w. mexican independence as mother's day, another fake holiday coming up to move product

be that as it may, i agree that our walmart is multi-colored, multi-classes, multi-generations, and i've never noticed any crime there, they have a visible security presence but i will take a guess and assume like any large dept. store they are concerned w. shoplifting and tag switching scammers

the grocery selection in our walmart food center is rather poor although the liquor section is not bad (ah louisiana, where booze is sold at discount in grocery stores) but the prices are right for the products they do have

4. Security? That would cut into profits!
Can't have that now can we? Better to cover it up, smooth it over, donate a few bucks to a battered women's shelter and have the MSM ignore it.

5. I was involved in opposing the building of a walmart in our area. We
cited crime statistics from a recently opened walmart in another area of the city, and the increase police assistance requested calls for that area.

In the 90 day period after the the opening of the store, there were over 200 calls to the police for assistance. This was not in an area known to have a lot of documented criminal activity.

Wish us luck.

6. It's not always what you see
Walmart by nature is a part of a race to the bottom, they come into town and force successful small business out then don't pay a decent wage or offer decent health care. What we end up with is people who used to be able to take care of themselves and now can't afford to shop at anywhere but Walmart, paychecks come from and go to the same place. It's like a newer version of owing your soul to the company store.

In any place where we have an environment like that we'll also have desperation, and desperation means more crime. Not seeing it doesn't mean it isn't there. My wife grew up just a couple of miles from where I lived when I was a kid, she thought and she had always been told that she lived in a safe neighborhood. Then she saw a few of my old friends, some of the streets I knew that were within walking distance of her home, and a lot of illusions were shattered. It was always right there, but she never saw it before.

It doesn't matter if you do it with prison, with poverty, by forcing them out of work and not offering a better option or whatever else. It will bred more crime in one degree or another, even if it's not as visible as it might be in some places. That's the nature of desperation or poverty.

11. our walmart is very secure
there is always a st. tammany sheriff's department clearly marked vehicle and officer at our covington walmart, i presume they are paid by walmart and not by the parish, but they are always there

not any great risk of rape and murder around here, to be honest, i just assumed they were there to cart away the daily haul of shoplifters
