Bush says job market best in years...

'STILLWATER, Oklahoma (Reuters) - President George W. Bush on Saturday said the U.S. job market was the best in years, as he pushed an election-year effort to convince skeptical Americans that the economy is thriving.

Bush told new graduates at Oklahoma State University that the economy was "strong and growing" and added, "You will have more jobs to choose from than previous classes and your starting salaries will be higher."'

1. Compared to what exactly?
The LAST five years of his Presidency?

He claims the job marketing is growing, but with what type of jobs? Low pay, uninsured service economy jobs? Walmart greeter positions?

Fuck him. Every poll shows REAL Americans think the economy is tanking, despite what fantasy land we'd like to live in.

because in 2005 they decided to add golfclub waterhazards to the list of what qualifies as a 'wetland?'

They do count as wetlands. By NWI standards they are Plaustrine Unconsolidated Bottom wetlands.

12. that is laughable.
I keep hearing that, but I don't see the jobs

unless you can survive on part-time, $8-$10 per hour jobs with no benefits.

I'm "overqualified" for pretty much every job I've applied for in the last 6 months, despite having dumbed down my resume twice.

15. The 23rd Qualm
Bush is my shepherd; I dwell in want.
He maketh logs to be cut down in national forests.
He leadeth trucks into the still wilderness.
He restoreth my fears.
He leadeth me in the paths of international disgrace for his ego's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of pollution and war,
I will find no exit, for thou art in office.
Thy tax cuts for the rich and thy media control, they discomfort me.
Thou preparest an agenda of deception in the presence of thy religion.
Thou anointest my head with foreign oil.
My health insurance runneth out.
Surely megalomania and false patriotism shall follow me all the days
Of thy term,

And my jobless child shall dwell in my basement forever

No health benefits, long hours, low pay can lead to subsequent depression and career stagnation.

26. Exactly.
I used to have a salaried job with benefits -- quit to have a baby in 2000. Recently got back into the job market and now I have a job I love, it's great -- but part-time, no benefits, and $9 an hour.

And weirdly, I feel lucky...

40. yep.
plus you have the quandary of being reluctant to take a second or third part-time job (even though you need the money), because it still doesn't quite pay the bills and it might make it harder to find a "better" job.

I've come to the concluswion that my "career" is dead, after 20 years of stellar performance and considerable success.

22. "the job market best in years..."
In what alternate universe?

The only way it's the best jobmarket in years is for employers, b/c there are so many people trying for each open position that wages/bennies (if offered) can be lowered. It's an employers' market.

25. Sixty years after the boomers were all born, and they are all retired,
yes the job market will improve. It was written in the stars 60 years ago when a huge bumper crop of babies were born.

Don't let the fool use demographics to "proove" his policies.

As 2014 approaches, and the boomers all retire, as the richest bunch of retirees ever, and need services and have few people behind them to do all the jobs, yes, employment will improve.

53. Just like CIA told them Soviet Union was going to collapse under
its own weight and the neocons sent Reagan out there with a two gun holster to make it look like he won. Communism is crap. It was going to happen. Rummy & Cheney and gang just put it off long enough to make it look good for repukes.

It has been a harsh environment for jobs (with the exception of Clinton recovery & internet boom) for the last twenty-five years. Cause of the huge numbers of baby-boomers.

Now they retire and the opposite happens. Jobs will be plenty by 2014.

Nuking the Economy
Forget Iran—Americans Should be Hysterical About This
By Paul Craig Roberts

<snip>

Over the past five years the US economy experienced a net job loss in goods-producing activities. The entire job growth was in service-providing activities--primarily credit intermediation, health care and social assistance, waiters, waitresses and bartenders, and state and local government.
Job growth over the last five years is the weakest on record. The US economy came up more than 7 million jobs short of keeping up with population growth.

US manufacturing lost 2.9 million jobs, almost 17% of the manufacturing work force. The wipeout is across the board. Not a single manufacturing payroll classification created a single new job.

The declines in some manufacturing sectors have more in common with a country undergoing saturation bombing during war than with a super-economy that is “the envy of the world.” Communications equipment lost 43% of its workforce. Semiconductors and electronic components lost 37% of its workforce. The workforce in computers and electronic products declined 30%. Electrical equipment and appliances lost 25% of its employees.

The workforce in motor vehicles and parts declined 12%. Furniture and related products lost 17% of its jobs. Apparel manufacturers lost almost half of the work force. Employment in textile mills declined 43%. Paper and paper products lost one-fifth of its jobs. The work force in plastics and rubber products declined by 15%. Even manufacturers of beverages and tobacco products experienced a 7% shrinkage in jobs.
